Topic: Buying a used da vinci 1.0?

After sitting on the sidelines for a long time I finally pulled the trigger on a used da vinci 1.0 machine.  The unit I bought has only 5 hours of lifetime use and still has over half of the original filament spool left.  I saw the 6 or 7 small items the gentlemen printed when he had it and the print quality looked good.  My questions:

1.) Should I go ahead and do the workaround to immediately start using other filament?  Which way should I go?
2.) Would it be worthwhile to change any Firmware or Software now?

If anyone has any other suggestions I would highly appreciate the help.  I'm excited to start printing and learning more about 3D printing.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions

Robert

I would suggest you learn the basics and in's and outs of printing before you start making too many changes. Unless this is not your first printer, you are going to find this is not a plug and play hobby and you must learn how to make tweeks and stuff to get optimal prints before you start making firmware, hardware, and host changes.

Printing since 2009 and still love it!

I would strongly suggest using the stock everything until you get the hang of vocab, processes, and drawbacks. Use the machine until you find something that can only be fixed by hacking the cartridge or changing the firmware. Too much too fast will make getting into 3D printing more difficult.

Robert  If I were in your shoes of a new used da Vinci I would watch through this guys videos.

Thanks Tin
Believe it or not i have already viewed most of his vids.  His site was one of the reasons I pulled the trigger on the da vinci.  Very informative.

thanks again though

I only have $300 in the machine.  I thought it would be a good starting point for me.  I also have a Carvewright CNC router that I have been using for several years and hoping to be able to combine these two machines to produce some cool new things.

For $ 300 not a lot to loose. cant even buy a kit for that price. I bid on a used davinci   about six months ago ened up going with the SD$ seemed like a better choice at the time. And I got a god deal on a used one as well.
so good luck I would say push it to its limits as a stock machine. If you find the limits too limiting then you can mod it. I am still running the SD stock. May mod it but if I want to . did not like feeling forced into it.
Sounds like you have the right mind set to make it work.

Re: Buying a used da vinci 1.0?

Just got home with the da vinci.  It has 82m of the original 120m filament still in the machine after he printed a small project to show me it working.  Excited to get started working.   I was very impressed with the quality of the few projects he printed.  I will post a pic of my first 3d print when its finished.  Thank you all for commenting and I look forward to utilizing the SoliForum as a great resource in the future.
