Topic: Simplify3d

Hi I am just a newbie at 3d printing and haw had the da vinci 1.0 for about 7 months. I have done no hacking to the actual machine, but use slic3r for my gcode. I was wondering if simplify3d is worth the $150 price tag and what features does it add. Also how do you get the gcode to the printer (do you add an extension the top like slic3r?) or do you have to send it some other way.

Thanks for any help in advance, I have been having reasonably good prints with the stock software but am hoping for better.

Re: Simplify3d

I'm a big fan - it helped me quite a bit when starting out and I was running stock firmware, and has continued to be irreplaceable once I changed to Repetier firmware and my skills improved. On stock firmware it will communicate directly and you can unplug once transferred. Not sure if it will communicate directly with Repetier, but I upload and manage via web with Octoprint.

Re: Simplify3d

So it will be able to export directly to the da vinci 1.0 printer? Does it just add more/better slicing options? Finally, does it really improve print quality?

Re: Simplify3d

1-yes directly.
2-yes many more options.
3- I have not made many prints with it yet but I would say that it let me had success more consistently. Also, I don't use glue stick 90% of the time anymore as it sticks well directly to the bed. The support control is great too.

I agree with Coin. I got S3d back in December and all the options you have is great. Last night I printed a 8 hour print and did not use anything on the glass. It looked great when it was finished.

Re: Simplify3d

And another agreement with Coin, especially the ability to get more consistent success. I find I still need the glue sticks with cheaper filament, with the better stuff (e.g.: Hatchbox) I don't need anything on the glass.

One suggestion: regardless of what firmware you run, put some effort into bed leveling and calibration. It makes a huge difference for me.

Final note: I never spent much time with Repetier Host or Slic3r, so can't speak to how those compare. S3D just made more sense to me from a UI/workflow point of view, but it might be worth checking those out. Free is a tough price to beat.

Re: Simplify3d

I just noticed by your first post they just raised the price of S3D, holy Batman!.

Even at that I think it is worth the price.

I deleted XYZware off of my computer so they can't mess with my firmware and
use S3D exclusively.

With the stock firmware I am able to control all aspects of the print job
except for the temperatures and filament and I use XYZerocart to override
those items so I am free from XYZ's control.

Does S3D work with the 1.0A? I want to make sure before I purchase today.

The supported printers list includes all of the XYZ printers I know of, including the 1.0A.

Going to get this soon myself for both the DaVinci 1.0 and my  SD3+E3D.

I know it's on the list. But I also know the 1.0A has different fw to lock users in to using XYZ carts and fw.

Re: Simplify3d

They specifically list the 1.0A with a firmware version of 1.0.3 as recommended.  Although all stock firmware, per the below web page, should work.

I have the latest Da Vinci 1.0a, v 1.0.3, and latest motherboard and S3D works great.

I just found out that S3D will control the temp of the bed and extruder so I have
printed several models in PLA, one over 3 hours and it works great.
