Topic: AiO Extruder Smoking

I finally got my printer to work after many errors, but now my extruder is smoking.  I tried to unload the cartridge to see if it was plastic burning or wires, but the printer just sticks at 221C until it hits error 0011 and never tells me to remove the filament like it used to.  I forceably removed the filament and the smoking stopped, so I'm sure the smoking was the plastic burning (plus my house smells like burnt plastic).  I emailed tech support, but they sent me instructions on how to check that my display is working correctly.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this?

Sounds like it is getting too hot. Your thermistor may be opened, meaning damaged. If you have a digital multi meter you can disconnect the thermistor harness above the extruder and measure across the pins on the extruder side and you should get around 100 k ohms at room temerature. If you are much higher or measuring open then your thermistor has been damaged or one of the wires is broken. Also check to make sure it is actually inside the brass heat block. Some have reported that the RTV that secures it has failed and it is actually outside or dangling near the block. This too would cause the temp to be too high as the measured temp is much lower than actual. This is your most likely cause as a damaged or opened thermistor should generate an error code.

xyz tech support asked me to send in the extruder and extruder cartridge; would those parts fix this issue if it's the thermistor?  that seems to be external to the extruder cartridge

The thermistor is inside a small hole in the brass thermsl block of the head. I assume that is what they mean by extruder cartridge. That is not an industry term though.
