Re: has any one printed Robot woman "Robotica"

Nearly every part has thousands of inverted faces.  Slic3r has a serious problem with that, and it will generate a Gcode with many missing parts and faces.

However, if you use Cura, it should work OK.

run the stls through netfab.  This should fit a lot of errors if not all of them.

Re: has any one printed Robot woman "Robotica"

Alright... So I couldn't leave this one alone, so I started dicking with it, and I found a way to fix it using NetFabbstudio Basic.  So far I've only done the chest.

From previous experience I know that when you have a lot of invalid oriented faces, it's usually due to one or two faces that fold back and intersect themselves, so I started looking for those, and found them.

The faces in question happen to be behind the breast plates.  Unfortunately, if you remove the breast plates, you have no way to put them back, as NetFabb Basic doesn't support Boolean operations.  So I needed to get a little creative.

First open up the CHEST_BUSTO4.STL part in NetFabb, then click the red cross Repair button.  Next zoom in on the area circled in the photo. Also notice that there are some 65,000+ invalidly oriented triangles!

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=7463

Next, we are going to open up a little of the breast plate top layer by removing a few triangles. Now we can see the defective triangles. They actually form a face that's folded on itself.  Using the triangle selection tool (highlighted in red), click these triangles and delete them until the entire area outlined in red, is gone.  Once it's gone, you'll see a couple of yellow lines, which indicate there's a small hole there.  Click "Close all Holes" to stick and close everything including the opening we made to get to the problem.

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=7464

Next we need to do the same thing on the other side (breast).

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=7465

When done, we go back to the status tab, and we can see that all the invalid orietations are gone, and that there are no holes in the model.  Click Apply Repair, and Remove Old Part when prompted.  Notice we no longer have a Yellow bang on the part.  It should be good to go.

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=7466

I tried uploading the fixed file here as an STL, but it's simply too big, so I zipped it.

I'll try working on the rest of them over the next few days, but this should get you going should you want to fix this yourselves.

Re: has any one printed Robot woman "Robotica"

This particular part was a bi*ch to figure out, I almost gave up on it, but eventually found the problem.

The error is once again a part of a face folding back and intersecting itself.  Here is the repair.

Like the other part, this one had over 40,000 invalid orientations.  after I found the part, I had to delete an entire strip of triangles from the right leg socket.  There is a crease there where the round socket and the outer body shell meet.  That crease was the problem.

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=7470

Once that was area was removed, the invalid orientations went away.  At this stage I had to options to close the holes automatic (close all holes) or manual.  Manually stitching each triangle would have produced a more accurate surface, but the automatic repair was good enough, considering how small the area is and that it's nearly invisible anyway.

http://www.soliforum.com/misc.php?action=pun_attachment&item=7471

All the other parts are OK, or have very minor errors (mostly degenerate triangles), which can be handled by NetFabb's automatic repair, or simply ignored.

Have fun printing this model.  I'll give it a shot too, as soon as I get my printer back on line (waiting fr my GT2 sprokets).

I had the same problem (but on a smaller scale) with another of that author's models (jointed robot) but did eventually get it printed using Meshlab similarly to your tutorial on Netfabstudio - doable but a painful process.  I downloaded Robotica but balked when I saw the amount of cleanup it required.  Thanks for sharing your work!!!

Re: has any one printed Robot woman "Robotica"

I started printing her too.  So far I printed the head, helmet, upper and lower torso, and the arms.  I also started putting her together using rubber bands as shown in the Thingiverse video.

The only problem I'm having so far, is that the hands and wrists, once you remove the support, are a little too loose.  So I'll probably have to insert some kind of thin piece of rubber between the parts, to increase the friction.

Next up are the legs.  At the rate I'm printing those, it looks like the lower legs, thighs and hips will probably take another 14-15 hours to print.  So far I have 20+ hours in it, since I'm printing at 0.1mm layers and medium speed for better quality.

Re: has any one printed Robot woman "Robotica"

Would it be possible for you to share all the fixed files in one post? and if not thanks for the ones you did share! I'm very interested in printing this model once I get my machine in a few months since I saw it on thingiverse!

I think a lot of people would be thankful if you published a cleaned version on Thingiverse.

17

Re: has any one printed Robot woman "Robotica"

I don't think it would be appropriate for me to publish the entire model since it's not mine.

I have posted here the 2 parts that needed cleaning, the chest and torso.  The rest of the parts are either OK as is, or have only minor errors (like degenerate faces), which do not affect the ability to slice the part.

So if you want to print this model, download the the original from Thingiverse, then download the 2 parts I posted here, and you're good to go.

Re: has any one printed Robot woman "Robotica"

is there anyway to get these tutorials in PDF format? I still have had no luck with the inverted triangles fix. it just dont repair anything after its finished going through the long fix function and applying. I must be clicking in wrong screen or something.

Thanks!  If I get it all together, I may upload it [and, of course, if I do, I will give full credit to you for the cleanup].  As long as you make clear it is a derivative and link to the original, this sort of thing is actually encouraged.
