XYZ has upload a 'hot fix' for the 1.1.1 osx XYZware.
The interesting part it's this last phrases
- Support refill filament to print.
- Add nozzle head registration toolkit when install new nozzle head for daVinci 1.0 model.
So the 'upgrade' options must be around the corner.

Well the support refill filament probably has something to do with the fact that they will be selling refill kits for their filament cartridges. Per their youtube video they appear to come with the new filament and the a new PCB to allow the filament to print. I just hope they have not made the software/firmware harder to work with other non-XYZ filament.

Well the support refill filament probably has something to do with the fact that they will be selling refill kits for their filament cartridges. There is an easy way around all of this security. They can enforce it, update it, and do whatever but if their board is no longer running the printer then you can use any filament and any host you want. Aside from their controller this is just any other printer and any other board such as RAMPS, SANGOLULU, SMOOTHIE, and so will work in it.

Yeah they are going to sell 'heads' to user that want to get the abs/pla heads from the 1.0A / 2.0A / Aio
My understanding is that the machines they are selling now have the required new heads for PLA. You think maybe they're moving to something like a cartridge like chip on the extruder so they can keep track of it as well as the filament?

They confirmed with me that my machine should print PLA with no other modification or need for a newer head. I have the latest 1.0A version.

There are three no four versions before 1.0A and it is those that would need a new head. Those owners like myself have or are converting our carriages and switching to the E3D hit end or in my case the PICO by B3 Innovations. With a third party head we can even print using nylon, polycarbonate, wood, metal, and other more exotic filaments.

I can see myself doing that upgrade at some point. Like you said in another post we can switch our boards out. However, I am not there yet. This is a new hobby for me and want to become more comfortable with it. My machine is still under warranty so I probably will not make any move until after that.
Also it would be great if there was a really spelled out tutorial about this at some point. Maybe there is and I am missing it.
For now I will try to work with this as best I can and most likely reframe from any further software/firmware updates unless I know they are "safe".
Confirming that the 1.0A is printing PLA just fine, with no head mods (well, I do use an XYZCart to set extruder temp to 200 and bed to 60).
Does anyone know the difference between the old head and the PLA compatible one on the 1.0A ?
I'm assuming it probably has better cooling.
Any pictures would be appreciated.

Damned if I can see any difference apart from the filament sensor ???
I can only see that the feed tube for the nozzle is different (no unthreaded portion on top), and, there is a new filament sensor.
Strange - I bought my Duo back in mid-December and it has the new filament sensors. But I believe I have the old-style feed tubes for the nozzles.
I would assume to print PLA on a 1.0A you would need a xyz PLA cartridge if still using stock firmware, but I dont think they are available yet
