Topic: New white filament from XYZ will not print.

I just received a new White filament cartridge from XYZ and it will not print.  It will load, and it will extrude, and it will print the white starter bars, but that is all.  It won't even print the demo's provided in the machine by XYZ.  I have printed with the colors Nature and with Black, and they both work great!
Do I need to make the extruder hotter for the White filament?  Or perhaps, I got a bad batch of filament?

Filament is not made the same pigments make them melt at different temp.  White usually requires higher heat while black requires lower.  Other  colors fall in between. Also there will be differences in the same color between different vendors.  If raising the temp 5 to 10 degrees does not help then you could have a bad batch.

That is odd.  Is the filament binded somehow in the cartridge?  Does it seem free?  I forget to pull out their stopper once and was wondering why it was not feeding.  smile

Hello
If it seems tight you might have to tear it apart. I got 2 different cartridges that somehow one of the little rubber stoppers had gotten down inside the cartridge and were hanging it up.

You guys may want to read his post better.  He said it feeds and loads fine and even prints the purge line.  That being said it is obviously not binding.  His hot end is not hot enough and the X5 white filament is notorious for its poor quality and printability. In fact it not just XYZ.  I have yet to find white from any vendor that prints as well as any vendors other colors. Remember in order to make white,  all pigments are added.  Those pigments increase the melting point of the filament.  Those with less pigments like natural melts at a much lower temp. Sometimes 30 degrees lower.

That may all be.  With my issue it was extremely similar to his since there was enough filament feeding to do what he was indicating but it was not progressing adequately enough since I forgot to "pull the plug".  It is a valid suggestion to try to help the OP with his issue.

All pigments added equal white? That works for light, but didn't think that worked for paint...

Did you not take art in school? Paint, ink, whatever it might be white is created by combining red, green, and blue.

Regardless I have been 3D printing for 6 years now and have a little bit of experience I would hope. I can say with certainty that color impacts the melting temperature of filaments and the closer to white they are the higher the temp needs to be. While the closer to black they are, the lower they need to be.

I would agree with that given my limited experience.

Re: New white filament from XYZ will not print.

is someone here seriously saying they add three pigments to get white, and hence the melting point
is affected more?  Why don't  they just add white pigment?

White pigment is still a mixture of the three primary pigments of red, green, and blue.  There is no such thing as just white pigment.

The pigment content may also not be the reason  for needing higher heat.  It could be the fact lighter colors reflect the heat from the heater block to an extent while darker colors absorb it.  Heat is IR radiation regardless of it's source and will behave like light.

Re: New white filament from XYZ will not print.

That is good info on the different color ABS.

I've had my Da Vinci about three weeks now and after many beautiful prints
with the nature cartridge that came with it I ordered a white.

The quality of the models where just not as good with the white so I thought the alignment
or maybe worse had developed with my printer.

After getting another "nature" color cartridge all is well again.

I also tries a red and a black cart and although they were much better than the white
they still did not look as good as nature color.

I am running a stock Da Vinci so have no control over the temp.

So is nature the natural color of the plastic with no pigmentation added?

Yes natural is just raw ABS with no pigment added.  That is why it prints and behaves so much better.

Re: New white filament from XYZ will not print.

Sorry but to make white you don't mix the 3 primary 'light' colors. I work with big printing machines and 'white' it's a color (used on some machines). Pigments (cyan, magenta and yellow). Anyhow about the post. Try to check if 'load more filament' works and the extruder 'spaghetti' flows right.

If the first line works it could be that the filament isn't hitting the printing area (not sticking because bed not calibrated). Maybe the corner it's calibrated but the other areas are not?

I agree. Nature prints much better than white. Black isn't bad though. After a month of printing, I use Nature exclusively.

Re: New white filament from XYZ will not print.

I got some white abs from suppliesoutlet yesterday and my zerocart today so I tried the white and bumped my extruder up to 220C from the stock 213-215C and it printed great.  If you have a new machine under warranty and you want more control of your prints using the stock firmware, the zerocart is the way to go imho. After my warranty is up, the fun will begin..

Just dont let it update the firmware or software from what you have now. If you do, you may find carts that are reset useless.

I'm on the stock firmware 1.1.E and the xyzware open mod. I won't be touching any stock firmware beyond that version or any stock xyz software with a barge pole !

The xyzerocart only spoofs the printer, not the carts, but you are right about not upgrading the firmware for all the other harm it causes.
