Topic: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

Hello, I was given a used SD2 with the wooden Z platform broken. Solidoodle doesn't seem to sell a replacement wooden kit or the Aluminum upgrade for the SD2. Does anyone know where I can purchase a replacement Z platform online? Preferably the Aluminum upgrade? I'm also open to laser cutting my own if cut files are available. I would like to restore functionality of this printer so I can donate it to my daughter's school. Any help would be appreciated!

I do have two other printers currently working if there are mods out that require printed parts to get this platform working again with extrusions or what not.

ask Solidoodle if an SD3/4 platform can be trimmed to work

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

Huh, I'm surprised to see that the aluminum platform for the SD2 is indeed no longer on their website.  The SD3 one is one there though.  Does anyone know if they are interchangeable?  I doubt it.

I would email them and see if maybe they have one laying around that they would sell you.

SD4 w/ RUMBA, E3D Volcano, all bearings, glass bed

@n2ri @mdrVB6

Contacting them was the first thing I did. They didn't provide a solution. The rep who emailed me back said they don't sell them (wood or aluminum).

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

SD2 platform is 4 7/8 x 10 7/16
Anyone with a 3/4 that can compare this?

I know the width should be the same, but the length on the other hand....

EDIT: I've been dragging my feet on designing a printable platform. Maybe I will be able to work on it this weekend. wink

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

yeah cant believe Solidoodle even stopped making models 1,2 & 3. as they all had great possibilities. everyone's stuck on biggest instead of whats needed. extruding type 3D printers for the foreseeable future are not able to print fast or good enough to feasibly print large objects in any time frame within cost efficiency for production. nobody wants to print something that takes days to maybe finish or fail. much less in a home/office environment.

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

also with the new duel heads and compact designs you can now make a SD2 with duel extruders using same 6x6x6 base which is all I determined I needed over 2 years ago for 99% of anything I may print. and I have over 7,000 stl files so...

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

There is  a Chinese company, Geeetech, who makes a printer that appears to be a direct copy of the SD2 (except they use actual bearings).  You might try contacting them to see if their platform works as a drop in replacement.  As a bonus, if this does work, you'll have bearings rather than bushings on your z platform.

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

Here is a STEP file of the wooden SD2 platform pulled from a complete printer found online. It should give you all the dims needed to build a new one or design your own.
I use it as a basis for all mods to my SD2. So far, everything has checked out dimensionally.

Post's attachments

SD2 BED_HOLDER.stp 103.25 kb, 7 downloads since 2015-01-10

SD2.jpg 61.03 kb, 2 downloads since 2015-01-10

You don't have the permssions to download the attachments of this post.

Thank you! I did see their copy in the past. I wasn't sure if it was a clone or not. I'll check it out!

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

Pretty cool about the Geeetech printer, they give you a better power supply with on/off switch, PCB bed heater and the STL's to all the 3D printed parts on the machine.

Slicer - Simplify3D

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

That 's so kind of you to donate it to the school,  i  found the platform, it is an Aluminum one and the
Dimension is 152x152x3mm. I am not sure if it is what you are looking for.  Try  search  Aluminum Build Plate for me creator  in geeetech.

Re: SD2 - Replacement wooden or aluminum Z platform

Hi xlq1010,
Thank you, but it is the "platform" I am looking for, not the build plate. It's what the build plate is bolted on to.
