Topic: New Da Vinci cartridge showing stats from an older cartridge

Current setup:

Da Vinci 1.0 (old model) running J firmware and simplify3d.

Issue:

My black cartridge I bought from Amazon is starting to run low (15m). I was getting ready to start a long build and threw in a brand new cartridge (black also) only to find out before the print started I got the low filament warning. I cancelled the build and validated through the "info" that it thinks there is only 15m left of 240m (again, this is brand new). I threw in the old cartridge and it still registered 15m left. I threw in another cartridge I have (red) and what seemed appropriate for that cartridge (140m of 240m). Threw back in the brand new black cartridge, it still says 15m left. I tried turning the printer off/on and it didn't make a difference.

Has anyone else had/heard of this issue? Anything I can try (outside of flashing new firmware/resetter) to get the stats to show up correctly?

Thank you in advance for any help/feedback.

Re: New Da Vinci cartridge showing stats from an older cartridge

If I understand correctly, the red cart shows up as the proper amount left while the black does not. If this is the case, then it is not an issue with the printer but the cartridge.

Makes me wonder if they are not just using the same code on a certain color when programming the carts. If that was the case then it is possible to get a new cart that the printer would see as a previous already used cart. That is going to mean some unhappy customers as well since they blew 40 bucks on a cart they can't use.

At this point there is nothing you can really do but submit a help ticket to XYZ and sew what they say. They may offer to replace the cart.

Re: New Da Vinci cartridge showing stats from an older cartridge

Well, I may have spoke to soon. I decided to do the print with the red cartridge which has over 100m in it. When the print started, I got the low filament warning but decided to let it go ahead an print. An hour in, I just got the filement end warning. I still have a couple of hours of print left so I'm just going to leave the error in the window and see what happens (hopefully it will finish).

Not the question will be did it also mess up that cartridge also. I'm thinking I should be changing my attention to flashing a new firmware.

Good grief.

Re: New Da Vinci cartridge showing stats from an older cartridge

Is it possible that an XYZ database of cartridges is confusing the cartridge with one that had been given a new serial number after refilling? If so that would mean we will all likely run the risk of buying cartridges that are already compromised. That does get me worried. It's bad enough spending 30$ to get a cartridge, but if there's no confidence that I can use it I would definitely want a way to protect my investment - whatever the solution.

For what it's worth, I also have xyz.exe blocked by the firewall, but this shouldn't matter because I have been using Simplify3d. For what it's worth, I spend the last couple of hours researching how to flash repetier. Getting ready to flash right now. Wish me luck.

Do you get a refusal to print when you disconnect from the network?
The XYZ cartridge database conspiracy theory should be easily tested.

They are not getting a refusal at all. They are getting a new cartridge to tell them it has the same amount left as the previous cartridge. This would indicate that the EEPROM in both cartridges has the same serial number or data and the printer sees both as the same cartridge.
