Topic: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

I had this in the hacks / mods forum earlier but without the STL files.  Here are the STLs, I modified it at Ian's suggestion to include a cavity to hold a sponge for cleaning the filament as it's pulled through.  Designed to be printed without support.  I printed at .2 infill.  Print on the slower side to get cleaner threads.

Let me know if you print and have any issues.  Once they're final I'll put them on thingiverse.

printing.

I'm gonna need to design a filament guide to attach to this at some point. All my octave filaments likes to pop off their spools and wind around the pvc.  using magnets, butterknife and ornament hook to resolve it right now, haha.

I use octave too.  I have this clip thing - don't know where it's from but I put a little tension on the spool so it doesn't overspin like a bait casting rod.

Same, printed with .3mm slic3r, 3 shells, 25% infill, no fan and its threads great!

Once again, some black crude was on the filament and got sucked into the extruder when this printed.  But this piece should solve that from happening in the future!

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

Thanks guys, now my first official entry on thingiverse.  I don't use the sponge it was added by request, let me know if you use it and there are any issues and I can tweak it if necessary.

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

i use the sponge, and it's a good thing. when i see all the dust that my previous system remove from the filament, it's not a question if you didn't want a clogged extruder.

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

Just installed the sponge as I switched to my new first white spool. I used an exacto to cut a slit down the sponge and just slide it in, working great so far! I have updated the modification wiki page to now point to this one.

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

So my sponge got real dry pretty quickly due to the hot air inside of the machine.

I have decided to try and switch from the sponge to a dremel felt polishing wheel and just feed the filament thru the mandrel hole in the center.

I have modified your rear part (my first real mod and my first time trying out tinkercad!) to have a dome to accept the felt wheel, 4 little slits for hot air to escape and gave it more length to help guide the filament to try and keep it on my spool.

I might need to add another inch or 2 onto this piece to help keep it on the spool. I am also wondering if I should add more vent holes as well.

I have not had a chance to test this yet. After work I will try and print this lil guy off.

Update: Printed nice, but a little to long. Going to mod it later today.

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

You're using a wet sponge?  I don't see why it needs to be wet to work, you just want to collect the dust not scrub it clean.

Either way that's the point of open source, make it work for you.

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

My sponge was not wet per-say, but it was moist right out of the package.  The warm air from the solidoodle made the sponge rock hard and that didn't seem right.

At my local 3d printer meetup, a guy said that he just threads a dremel felt polish wheel thru the filament and  lets it rest on the top of what we consider the acyrlic jigsaw in our machines.  I wanted to combine that cleaning approach with a guide system to keep the filament on the spool.

What do you use for your design work?

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

I used to design for a living so I just use Solidworks since it's second nature to me.

Re: Spool Guide / Filament Cleaner

My modified filament guide that had posted was a little long.  I shortened it and put it up as a derivative on thingiverse.
