I have like 200 meters of fishing line so I'd try that for sure.
But replace the motor belt? How did you do that? Someone told me you can't because the knot can get "under" the fishing line on the pulley and screw up (tangle, loosen the knot), which can't happen with the side open-loop belts because knots don't reach the pulleys.

Unless you get rid of it completely :-) With all the mods I made over the holidays, the direct drive for the Y rod was one of the easiest, and it definitely eradicated any circle problems to the limit of my detection capabilities:

Absolutely correct I have followed your direct drive closely.  Direct drive is the best way to go for sure.  I am operating on the theory "if it ain't broke don't fix it".  At the first sign of trouble with the drive belt I won't hesitate to switch it to Direct drive.

Again, I'm going to give that mod a try as well, ive ordered the coupler. before it arrives though I would like to test other possible solutions.
Someone on google groups commented on the trapezoidal teeth maybe not being as good for precision motion control as straight GT2 teeth.

I think what Ian is saying is you could try it we just haven't actually seen it done.
I actually plan on trying just out of curiosity.  The biggest obstacle is getting the length just right.

There's a couple of different knots that I found that may work.  It's one of those things that I'll just have to play with and see what happens.

It can't rotate the Y rod the same direction forever - eventually it hits a limit and has to go back. Maybe there is a way to get enough line wrapped on the pulleys that it never reaches a knot? (I have trouble visualizing exactly how I'd do that though :-).

I guess if the pulleys had tiny holes on one side you could get away with not using any knots and just doing this

I think something like redbarret showed in the picture above would work with a modification.  Instead of terminating at both pulleys as was suggested, simply loop around the second pulley, come back to the first, loop around the opposite way, and terminate it through another hole (or notch) on the other side.

For this to work, you would have to know how many revolutions the pulley makes to allow for the full distance of the y travel, which would be how many total loops to make (just as Claghorn suggested above).  In addition, there would have to be enough width on the pulley to accommodate all of the loops without overlapping.   Just by guessing at the size of the pulley, I would say no more than 8 loops would be needed, possibly less.

The same thing could be accomplished using a closed loop with the knot at the center of the loops on the pulley.  If aligned/positioned properly with respect to the mid point of y travel, the knot would never leave the pulley.  Therefore, it would not affect movement.

BTW, how about 3d printing a custom pulley that instead of the teeth meant for belts has a spiral like this?

My guess is that yes, it would help keep it from tangling.  I'm thinking that as long as you replace both pulleys, it shouldn't alter the y movement.  One rotation of the motor shaft would still result in one rotation of the y rod.

My guess is that it isn't going to tangle with the correct knot and placement of that knot.
In a week or so I'll have one of my printers apart for some updates.  I'll try it at that time.

Or you can just buy premade filament drive reel at 3d.grabercars.com These are done on a screw machine, so they have tighter tolerances and finer features than what most home machines can print.

I have dozens of fishing rigs and plenty experience with braided line pros and cons. and for this application mostly cons due to how abrasive it is on anything it rubs on including ceramic and steel. yes its strong but at what cost. also do not try to break it with hands or grab it. may as well be doing it to a razors edge.

I have 1 fishing rig with 100lbs test braided and wont use it unless I have an extreamly sharp knife or shears tied on my wrist in case line needs cut fast. line test strength is less than breaking point under some conditions and that type line is part Kevlar.

if you use it as replacement for a hack saw blade you may never need another blade lol
