Topic: Simplify 3D

I see several people mentioning they are using this software with their Da Vinci, just curious how many here are using it and if they are getting a lot better results over the stock software?  It sucks that they don't offer a demo of their software.

There actually is a demo but you have now how to use torrents and have a torrent client to get it. It is also an older version which is why it is demo. From the post I have seen there is one for this software in this section, they have had much better results.

My issue is I bought my Da Vinci for 300 and I can't rationalize buying software that cost have of the device to run it on. I will go with Craftware once I get my mods finished.

Re: Simplify 3D

Well, the cost of the printer is negligible anyway, I have spent probably as much as I paid for the printer in filament since then also.  My copy of AutoCAD (my real job is architectural design) cost more than my computer and plotter, it's all relative, hobbies are expensive.  I just hate to lay down the money for something if it isn't going to make a difference.

Well here is the relevant thread of when the software was first discovered and tried out. Granted it was on the DUO but you should get similar mileage.

Re: Simplify 3D

Carl, in your experience (not considering the price difference) do you think the Simplify 3D software would give as good or better end results than flashing the firmware and using Repetier software?

Re: Simplify 3D

I have Simplify 3d and love it. I am still learning how to use it. You can have more than one process for one model. An example would be if you wanted the bottom of the model printed with a 50% infill and the rest of the model at a 20% infill, You can setup 2 processes for that model and tell each process at what point to switch the infill from 50% to 20%. You can also set the temps per layer. There is a lot it will do I just have not learned how to do it all yet. I have been using it for about 3 weeks.

As I said I have not used it, but from what I have seen of the videos and specs I would have to say yes it would simply based on the fact it has much more flexibility. In fact if you could flash the firmware and then use S3D I bet it would even out shine those still using it + stock firmware.  mainly because you could then fine tune feed rates and esteps per access to get precise dimensions and flow. But unfortunately as I have found the Repetier firmware seems to only want to play with the Repetier host. It constantly sends and OK or actually whatever you want to put on that line which cause other host to error out as they are expecting an OK or READY only once and nothing else. I have not figured out how to prevent this firmware from doing this yet and to only send the ACK that most host expect.

I have also found Rep firmware has a bug that shows it's ugly head a few days after you install it and I believe it is related to the communication setup as well. The odd thing is that it does not appear in the precompiled beta bin. This is not the topic of this thread however so I will not get into that here.

+1

I like that it give you more control of support and layer choices in a very easy format.
You can print at .1 on the outside and .3 for the infill.
You can print part of your model at .3 to build up a base per say, the switch to .1 to finish off the top for a better look and faster time.
I can't speak about how it will do with the Davinci, but I don't see why it shouldn't work.
If your doing really simple prints, then no it's not worth the extra money.  But if you want to do more tricky prints with custom support without have to change the model, then it's worth ever penny.

Re: Simplify 3D

I used S3D both with the stock firmware on my Duo and now with Repetier firmware. I've not used the Repetier host software to compare it to. For me, S3D is well worth the money in both situations. S3D gives you far more control than the stock firmware and really does give you the ability to either accept complexity and tweak settings to get the best results or to just accept the presets and get decent quality. The numeric placement control it provides alone was worth the money for me as I don't see how anyone could successfully do multicolor prints (I have a Duo) without it.

Re: Simplify 3D

Are their presets as good as stock? I have a friend that got a Tazbot a while ago and still has not been able to dial it in.

My unit is making pretty good prints with whatever settings it uses. I would like to be able to tweak and get it better, though.

Re: Simplify 3D

I found the presets to be as good as the stock s/w. I have been able to tweak my config slightly and get better prints than stock. This comes from someone who is a 3d newbie, so that's pretty good. I haven't investigated the more advanced portions of the s/w yet.

Re: Simplify 3D

I am a newbie also to 3D printing and purchased a Da Vinci 1.0 and a few
day later Simplify3D because XYZware just could not do what I needed.

I had a model that definitely needed a bridge on the bottom but nowhere
else.  XYZware added bridges all over the model and made a big mess.

S3D allowed me to add or remove bridges and manipulate them any way
I wanted.

I had one model that I wanted a heavy solid base and the rest hollow,
S3D allowed this with ease.

The default setting in S3D are about the same as XYZware but almost always
print faster and better.

There are so many configurable options in S3D and I have no idea what they
all do.

If I mess it up I just load my default printer back in and start over.

I am also running the latest firmware with no hacks on my Da Vinci.

And no I don't work for S3D.  lol

Re: Simplify 3D

Appreciate all the feedback, sounds like it's worth checking out.

Re: Simplify 3D

I love the adjustability s3d offers. The only thing now is to try a different firmware to have complete control over the printer. But here is a pic of a gear i printed last night using s3d. This one is blown up to 1.25% scale and took 1hr and 30min with .2 layer height and 30% infill

Ill try and post the setups later tonight as they are different for each. But s3d has so many settings it takes a while to type it out haha.

Screen captures would be easier then just host the images on a site like photobucket and then direct link them here.

His settings could come in handy for other programs as well though. FFF files won't do other users any good.

Don't suppose you have a link Carl ?
I'd be tempted to buy it, if it's as good as folk say, but I'd want to make sure it works with my printer first.

Re: Simplify 3D

The Demo Version i've seen floating doesn't have direct USB support for the Davinci. That was added in 2.2 , The Demo is version 2.1.

I've heard they are good at honoring refund request. I don't know cause I'm enjoying the software!

Re: Simplify 3D

I am going to wait to post my settings as I got a message today saying there is an update so now I am running version 2.2.1 and all I can say is after my initial test print of the same gear I am getting much better results. the gear in the pic above is scaled at 1.25% and I am printing them now at .5% half the scale of the original file and normally its not as good but the new update is proving to be a lot better. will post my results when I get it dialed in even further today.
