Topic: NASA Wrench

I just printed off the NASA 3D socket wrench and it works well.

I used White ABS

  • 90% Fill
    Normal Shells
    .1 Layer Height
    Standard Speed

Barnacules did a video on it on YouTube:

It works really well.  It is only one way since the wrench does not have a toggle on it to reverse it.  I printed this in part to see how dialed in my printer is after the adjustments that I have made to it in the last week.  I am very pleased.

Also, I emailed XYZ (I know others have as well) and they indicated that my version of the printer supports PLA with no additional hardware changes (latest revision 1.0A - 1.0.3).

Here is the link to the wrench STL:

Re: NASA Wrench

I printed one and it wouldn't move it was welded together.

Da Vinci 1.0 stock firmware and stock xyzware.
3D printer Noob.
Stock ABS filaments

Re: NASA Wrench

I printed one, and it worked fine.  It's a good test of your extrusion and calibration settings.  I'm a Solidoodle guy, so I'm no help to you there.

I used .1 layer height, 20% infill, but next time I'll make my top and bottom perimeters a bit thicker.

It's a cool print!

I had to apply some pressure on it with a real socket to get it to move at first.  The inner mechanism turns counter clockwise if you are looking at the front of it.  Once I loosened it I had no issues in using it.

If your printer is fairly well calibrated, leveled and does decent circles then this should work on the Da Vinci.  To clarify I used some white XYZ filament I had purchased with my printer before I started using other filament.

Hopefully you can get it to work.  For some reason I think this is pretty cool.

Re: NASA Wrench

I printed one the other day. I had to force it to turn the first few times before it worked like a real socket drive. But it works great now.
Very Cool. smile

Re: NASA Wrench

Just printed it, stock firmware and software.  Printed great, minimal amount of force to break it free the first time, but it is tight and works great.  Printed it at .1 solid slow with some cheap Microcenter grey filament.

Re: NASA Wrench

Now I need a socket to print.  Which makes me wonder why they had sockets on the space station but did not have a wrench?

Re: NASA Wrench

I printed the wrench on my duo and no workie
90% solid
.1
Slow speed
Normal shells

Seems that the first 1/4 is melted and looks bad, the rest looks perfect, but this seems true of everything i print! I think the bed gets to hot an melts the print I'll post pix later and see if anyone can tell me how to print on this thing

Re: NASA Wrench

Calibration needs to be pretty perfect for this one.  I printed 3 in a row back to back right after re-calibrating. The first one worked perfect, the 2nd one I had to break loose the internal gear, the 3rd one I wrenched off the part that goes into the socket trying to break the internal gear loose.

I Broke mine off too...UGH, im still wondering if the Bed is too hot, other prints that i do fold up and look melty
I am doing this all off of stock xyz software and firmware on the Duo with 2.0J firmware i believe

Re: NASA Wrench

I think I had my bed set to 80 or 90 when I printed mine. Usually corners bend up because there is not enough glue.  Don't be afraid to put 4-5 layers (or more) of glue stick on the platform.

Re: NASA Wrench

It just seems that the bend up is due to excessive heat. With white filament it can turn tan and the bed reports 70

Re: NASA Wrench

I have tried several times with various settings, and it always fails, im trying on davinci 1.0 repetier 0.91. Did anyone on similar setup manage to print a working wrench? can you share your settings via private message or post here?
