Re: ABS vs HIPS

do a search on the forum for HIPS and see what its for. you will understand better.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: ABS vs HIPS

HIPS (high impact polystyrene) is a material in and of itself. Even though it's ability to be dissolved in some solvents is often exploited for use as a support material in 3D printing, it doesn't mean that's the only use for it.

dubbsd, you'll have to clarify what you mean by "durable" - sounds like that would depend on the application. Do you need strength? Wear resistance? Based purely on material properties, it looks like in general ABS is stiffer, stronger, more wear resistant and more impact resistant. I don't know whether the printing process (interlayer adhesion, etc.) varies enough between them to be significant though, and having no experience with HIPS I couldn't tell you.

Re: ABS vs HIPS

I wouldnt use it by itself for models due to water washing it away. kinda like the 'Draino' song lol

n2, factcheck time again:

* HIPS dissolves in solvent, not water. It's chosen as the solvent that popularly dissolves it and not ABS (limonene) is not too toxic.
* PVA (you're thinking of this) is also used as a support material, but it does dissolve in water.

Re: ABS vs HIPS

Water washes PVA, HIPS is dissolved by Limonene.  If you want brilliant white, HIPS is a good choice.  The roll I have is a better glossy white than any ABS whites I have tried
