Topic: Transparent ABS

I was thinking of printing some things in transparent ABS, but am worried that Chinese manufacturers are the only ones that make it. Does anyone know an American source for it?

Re: Transparent ABS

Wow I didn't even know about transparent filament. I'm definitely interested in a US supplier as well smile

I think it produces more of a frosted look. Not really perfectly clear plus you'd see the lines the printer creates. They also have glow-in-the-dark, filament that changes colors depending on the temperature, and flourescent.

Why does that worry you ? Can't imagine what the concern would be besides being parochial ...

If you want actually transparent material, I'd suggest you use the t-glasse from Taulman... I have yet to find a transparent ABS that is actually transparent... But I guess since whilst Taulman is a US company, and their Nylon is manufactured within the US, their T-Glasse *doesn't* boldly proclaim 'manufactured in the USA' like their Nylon products, so is probably not a suitable candidate since its most likely made by the worrisome Chinese...

He might just be worried about manufacturing quality and consistency.

Re: Transparent ABS

I think he's thinking of Chinese food, bridges and air quality control. Perhaps he can be forgiven for suspecting Chinese commitment to quality.

Oh, and where do those "tools" come from that Harbor Freight dumps on us? I give that place about a 3, maybe 4, for quality products. The Chinese can do it when they want to, it seems they just prefer to whip stuff out quick and dirty. And cheap.

Or perhaps, that's what we demand.

Exactly. They've made toys for children that have cancer causing chemicals in them and baby cribs that collapse. So something like a raw material that we can't visual determine its quality as well as melting it so that it gives off fumes makes it seem all the more important that it be made in the U.S. or Europe.

Re: Transparent ABS

I have nothing against the Chinese people or Chinese food for that matter. But in a country with loose labor laws and quite a bit of human trafficing I don't expect workers to risk the only work they can get to whistle blow on the quality of the product they are making. The Chinese are all manufacturing these days and the U.S. are all designing. I'd rather trust those that know how to make a product right than those that have the ability to make it cheaply. Now the Japanese are awesome. Still top notch with technology and great architecture.

Re: Transparent ABS

Actually the Japanese are really great at copying too....
