Topic: Still trying to figure out this Repetier thing
I have looked all around for quite some time, and still can't find a "Complete newbie's manual to the Repetier" so all I have is guesses thus far. So I need some answers. Can someone help me out a bit here. Please understand I have only used a da vinci 3d printer, and thus think like a user that has only used a da vinci 3d printer.
From what I have gathered, it comes in 2 parts. Firmware (And someone has created custom for the Da Vinci) and host. The host almost seems like it is the real time communication with the printer. I load the gcode into the host, and the host says, in real time "Okay, move here, extrude some plastic, move here, do this." etc. This would mean that if the computer running the host software where to shutdown, crash, or otherwise stop communicating with the printer, the printer would simply stop in the middle of a print.
Isn't that a MAJOR downgrade from what we have with stock firmware? With stock we send the part to the printer, and turn off the computer. It prints, and that's all there is to it. If the computer crashes, it does not affect the print. If the USB cable comes unplugged, it does not affect the print. Now, am I misunderstanding how this works? Or is what I described just ONE possibility of how it can work?
Now, that being asked, here is what I desire to be able to do, and could really use some help pointing me in the right direction. I want to send the gcode file to the printer, just like I am doing with stock, but then later on want to be able to send a "Stop printing" or a "Pause printing" command from the computer during the print. You see my printer is located at my store, and often I start prints and go home. I have a webcam in the printer so I can monitor it. So as of right now, if something goes really wrong (And it has more then once) I have to drive the 15 min to my store to stop it. More then enough time to do allot of damage, or waste allot of filament. If I could send commands to it from the computer, I could log into the computer with teamviewer or something, and just send a "Stop printing" command. Not to mention the ability to print without any cartridge in it.
Thanks in advance
