Topic: Unthreaded Z rod size?

I could have sworn the rods were 10mm, but they measure at about 9.57mm.
I ask because I am attempting a DIY SD2, and I of course need the correct size to guide the platform.
I take it they are not metric at this point...anyone know the size?

If your calipers have an internal measurement tool measure the diameter of the hole they should fit in.

I get the same 9.57 and would guess that it is supposed to be 10mm they just are of poor tolerance.
No common standard measurement would be closer.

3/8" is 9.52mm.

They're not bad tolerance, they're SAE. Solidoodle loves mixing and matching SAE/metric.

I blindly ordered a 36" 10mm rod under the assumption that would be the proper size.

Okay, so it's a poor tolerance SAE 3/8 rod then wink  Actaully having a really bad math day!!!  You might want to measure the bushings you are using or use linear bearings.  No reason not to utilize those rods.

My primary concern is for the rods to fit the bushings for the stock platform.
Inner diameter of the bushings are 9.53, so that all works out.

On a side note:
MAN! I just checked the cost of 3/8" rods and linear bearings!!! F(*^& expensive...$25 per unit for bearings and $33 for 36" long rod. Wish I had access to a lathe and just shave this rod down at this point.

But you have 10mm rods why would you buy 3/8 in linear bearings?  Couldn't you also just drill out the bushings?
If there was only some place that would say have things like drills to rent wink

Yes. I suppose I do.... sad Sad panda.

Unfortunately I do not have immediate access to a drill press since it is not on site, nor do I have 10mm bits on hand, but that can be solved with $8. Plus, I would then have to widen the holes of the frame by about half a millimeter. I don't mind putting the work in at all, but if I could simply buy something and drop it in, I would take that route. Lazy consumerism, eh? wink

Wow those rods are expensive. Am I to assume that those are not stainless steel prices as well? Holy cow. SD must get a good deal on them or something.

And I know how bulk pricing works but if they're that much more individually I'm sure the unit price in bulk is also higher.

also for future ref. if not going linear which cant be drilled out lol. most bushings have weep groves inside to allow lube to spread around when turning and drilling would remove those

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

N2ri, I thought most bushing didn't have grooves, but just had the oil impregnated in micropockets? Is that only a surface finish, as you suggest?

the so called  lifetime sealed sleave bearings have oil soaked felt in pockets on sides with a few tiny weep holes to inside surface so when friction heats it makes oil wick towards heat but these dry out after a few years or wash out if used on outside condensers in weather. non oil impregnated bushings/sleave bearings have hair like groves scored on inside surfaces running in a crisscross diagonal spiral looking like the guide shaft on an open face spinning reel so when shaft turns either direction the oil/grease can be spread from outer ends where its added to inner surface of bushing and if those groves get worn or cut away from drilling etc lube fails to save shaft from burnning/waring out. babbet bushings that where formed onto shafts by poring molten  silver or bronze into form around shaft inside stuffing box before modern bearings came along relied on a grease or heavy oil bath with felt pacing holding it close to babbet like the jornal boxes on railroad car trucks hence the term "hot box" when they failed to lube good and got over heated melting babbet material allowing axle to seize possibly derailing train. I have replaced hundreds of different bearings and the soft steel or brass shafts due to poor lube and most times it cuts deep into shaft b4 getting noticed as needing serviced. causing lots of associated parts damage and smoking from glowing red burning old lube
