Topic: Suggestions for a beginning 3d printer.

Hi there i am thinking about purchasing a 3d printer for parts for an rc car. i have a few rc vehicles and the price of the plastic parts has started to climb. i was wondering that if i purchased a 3d printer, would the parts it printed out be strong enough? or would that depend on the type of plastic/filament i buy? i am looking to spend under 500$ i know this is a hard price to work with, but i am not going to be doing anything serious with it. Thanks

Kind of an open question  depends on what forces you are talking about compression strength shear strength or tension strength.
People are making prosthetic hands for kids from PLA they get quite the workout.

would that depend on the type of plastic/filament i buy?

yes different materials will give different strength. High strength materials such as nylon will require more heat to process and likely beyond the limits of a low end hot end found on most printers You will need an all metal hot end such as an ED3 this is a $80 upgrade that you would need to install.
Price aside you need to figure out what features you need in a printer.
Things to consider.
print envelope what  is the max size part it will make.
power supply  amps/watts
Heat bed
Hot end
On board controls
Type of frame jungle gym , wood or metal cube.
Looks is a clean neat appearance important.
Open  or closed source.  Does the manufacturer require you to purchase there filament , do you need to hack the machine to use open source material.

You can definitely do some cool stuff with a 3d printer, but if you race I don't think you will be happy.  Nowhere near the strength/weight ratio of the graphite frames and not even as strong as the injection molded plastic for the same weight.  But if you don't race competitively, you will definitely enjoy the flexibility to print, well, anything you can dream up.

Strength of the part also depends on which way the layers are printed in relation to the part.

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D
