Topic: Cutting large objects into a smaller printable size?

I could have sworn I saw this feature used in Netfabb or Skp, but I do not see it. Currently, after saving the complete .skp, I'm having to go back in, and delete sections in order to get them down to a printable size.
This route I am taking works, but isn't there a program feature that can separate chosen areas?

Can you put a cutting primitive in Sketchup to swipe out one half and then export to .stl then undo and vice/versa?

I'm not sure if this is what you want, but NetFabb has the ability to cut through an object in all 3 planes (X, Y & Z).  You can also make angled cuts, by simply rotating the model and then using the X, Y or Z plane to cut it.

Sorry, I use only Solidworks...if you have a model, you can cut it with a surface or just a primitive block extrude to wipe out one half or the other...

EDIT:  Pirvan's solution works!

Re: Cutting large objects into a smaller printable size?

I'm using Repetier Host v1.0.6 and it has all the functions to cut up objects like you want.  You just have to play with the sliders.

Also, Cura, which is integrated into Repetier Host now, has the cut feature built in to where you can tell it to cut off so many mm's of the object botttom.  It's how i printed the tank, it's nice being able to make an exact amount with it so you know how much and don't end up missing a portion of your print.

Re: Cutting large objects into a smaller printable size?

NetFabb basic has cutting features.  The examples I showed are done with the basic, free version.

The paid version has a more powerful feature called "Free Cut" which allows you to draw free hand the area you want cut in multiple planes.

@pirvan- Thanks! All glory to the Netfabb master wink

@accusedmonk- Thank you for that as well! I haven't experimented with Cura one bit to be honest, and your post reminded me I had it smile Looks like some tinkering fun in my future

The Basic free version does about 75% of what most of us would need it t odo, except Boolean operations which would really be useful when trying to clean some of these broken models.  But for the price, FREE!, it does quite a bit.

The Private version does about 98% of everything you could possibly want, and costs $300, but you could only use it for personal, non-commercial projects.

The professional version adds a whole slew of esoteric features and that frankly are not needed by most hobbyists or professional users, but lets you use it for commercial purposes.  For that privilege you get to pay $1800.

Hmm.....  I wonder which one I'd get if I had the money.

Useful! I didn't know Netfabb has this option. I just use it for repairing files and I usually cut object in Rhino.
