Topic: dual extruder question

since solidoodle now has the dual extruder model, i was wondering, how is 'ooze' handled during a print with the idle extruder?
the way my SD3 oozes i would think it would loose some of the print while switching from one nozzle to the next.  I'm interested in a dual not for two colors, but for soluble support material.

Re: dual extruder question

I wonder about that as well, but I'm sure most of the ooze I see on my old stock solidoodle is due to the huge volume of melted plastic inside the nozzle. I'd expect a different design to not retain so much stuff to ooze, so perhaps that solves the problem.

Solidoodle 2 with Deluxe kit cover & glass bed with heater. and 2nd board SD2 used not 3rd and alum platform not installed yet still wood. also need cooling fan installed to board. use Repetier Host couple vers. Slic3r also have all free ware STL programs

Re: dual extruder question

I think this is a problem common to all dual extruder machines.

Solutions I've come across vary from the slicer implementing a 'prime and wipe' move, sometimes building a tower to do it with, which is independent of hardware. Another machine has some crazy needle-valve setup to eliminate ooze directly.

I am also interested as to whether solidoodle has a plan for this, or whether they'll be leaving it to us to work out when the machines land - the workbench was definitely marketed as a tinkerer's machine! smile

LOL YUK! both those ways are great videos to show why I dont want duel extruders. hope SD or somebody has better design to retract or?

Re: dual extruder question

I have a Makerbot Replicator 2X that is dual extrusion and the software has a Retract setting to suck the filament back in the nozzle
and if you are using both nozzles it makes a purge wall for each and purges after a nozzle has set for a few minutes and before it starts to print. it took me about 2 hours getting the retraction set wright but  I no longer have an ooze problem.
The big problem with a duel is head alignment.
if you have to take a nozzle apart for cleaning and don't get them exactly the same height. They will knock the part over on the bed!

Re: dual extruder question

another option

many others look like these compact units I have posted links to, but are really huge versions for industrial use

I like something like this to help with the ooze problem.

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D

Re: dual extruder question

Personally, I'm waiting till we find out more details from E3D about the cyclops. It sounds like it will run two separate filaments (one at a time) through the same hot end nozzle. That should be a pretty compact design and I'd imagine have zero ooze problems (but details seem to be very slim at the moment :-).

yes with a pile of wasted filament from both materials that have to purge between each shift from 1 to other every layer that dont always purge 100%

Re: dual extruder question

from what Im seeing  when searching for new compact duel extruders. in a couple months there is going to be several new kids on the block offering different choices to fill this demand. and we will be able to mod an old SD2 into a mini  better, cheaper Apprentice like what we have been asking SD for the last 2 years. maybe they can reopen the SD2-3 lines for DIY geeks like on here. cause thats what I have decided to do with mine. why reinvent the wheel? because nobody else is upgrading it as promised. wish we could do same thing with our TVs lol
