Topic: Drying NatureWorks PLA Polymer 4032D

Anyone having experience drying this pellets in a regular kitchen owen?

I've had exactly 500 grams on a tray at 80 degrees Celsius for 10 hours and when I measure the weight it's only lost one gram?!?

Any comment appreciated.

That should be fine, if it only lost 1 gram perhaps it wasn't very moist to begin with.

Can't say I'd recommend putting plastic in an oven you make food in, though.

Why are you using 4032D? 4043D is much more common for 3D printing. 4032D is a high temperature PLA.

Thank's M8!

That's what I thought even before trying drying but I wanted to try drying to be sure moisture in the pellets isn't an issue.

When I decided on this one I searched forums online and at that time I could not find any preference either way.

I could not find any real difference in the data sheets so I went for this one thinking that "high temp" would possibly offer slightly higher glass temperature...

Gotcha. Makerbot uses 4032, so I'm sure it's fine. Just curious.

I use this for pre drying: http://www.amazon.com/Presto-06300-Deh … dehydrator

I've got one of those things.... didn't think it could really hit the necessary temps?

I usally leave pellets in anywhere from 10-24hours. It worked for some TPU I extruded. I have a batch of nylon drying right now, and if that works out then I'll know the dehydrator works out for sure.

What do you use for drying your PLA?

I can confirm that 17 Hours of drying in my dehydrator works. The nylon looks smooth and bubble free.

what are you using to prevent the pellets from dropping down through the mesh?

Parchment paper, but I am going to print out some containers that will sit on top of the mesh.
