Topic: Hello from Houston

Hi all.  I've been lurking on the site for a while and finally decided to join in since my Engineering Department recently to purchase a 3D printer, Makerbot Z18, which only took months of convincing.  I'm very new to 3D printing but have about 12 years of Autodesk Inventor 3D modeling experience.  I look forward to learning more about this fantastic field as I melt my way through pounds of PLA trying to figure out how to use my machine.  Are there any regular events or groups in the Houston area I should know of?

Thanks in advance.

If you build it they will come. Then they will make fun of it, tell you it's not worth doing and go home and try to copy you.

Re: Hello from Houston

I know.  I tried to explain that for the same money I could get three Rostock Max v2 kits with upgraded ends, a complete Struder factory and build a shredder.  I'm VERY happy that he finally agreed to let me make any purchase in this field.

Yeah.... People that have never actually "made" something don't realize the joy of seeing something materialize from a pile of other material.  I'm still amazed how most of humanity doesn't forget to eat or breath sometimes.  There is no such thing as common sense anymore.  I think the terms should be changed to "Uncommon sense".

As for myself I'm the design manager and lead designer at a air conditioning manufacturer.  I spend most of my day behind three computer screens but now get to play with my Z18.  I just checked out our website the other day and realized that they have several of the units I designed on the slideshow on the main page.  The "High Ambient" was my latest of favorite.  It was designed for 135 deg. ambient conditions and was shipped to the Middle East.  Check it out @ www.customairproducts.com if you have a chance.  To give you some idea of scale the access doors are large enough to walk into.

If you build it they will come. Then they will make fun of it, tell you it's not worth doing and go home and try to copy you.

Re: Hello from Houston

Not sure what you mean by groups, but there is RxTx near downtown... it's our local hackerspace and they have lots of community 3d printers (along with lathes and mills and whatnot) and they teach classes and have groups and such. txrxlabs.org
