Topic: Checking moisture in roll of filament

would this moisture meter work to check  the moisture content in a roll of filament.
if so  what % would be acceptable?

Re: Checking moisture in roll of filament

Here's a good video on moisture content percentages for ABS as well as information on how to properly use Silica to keep your filament dry. It isn't as straightforward as getting Silica and using it, but it's not tough. You should be aiming for more like 2%, as opposed to 20%. 20% is extremely high, think about it. A 1kg spool would have 200 grams of water at those rates! That's like running it over a sprinkler!

Re: Checking moisture in roll of filament

well I know if wood gets dryer than that it splits/cracks from shrinking too much, so figured plastic may get brittle also
also I have worn rubber wrist watch bands for over 35years with my stainless divers watches due to skin reactions to most metals. and if you ware rubber in a pool the clorine drys in out and it gets brittle and breaks apart within a couple weeks. have to rub Vaseline etc into rubber (rubber is oil based like plastics) to keep it pliable. it also drys out in arid desert places.

have seen plastic car interiors and bumpers crumble due to sun drying also. and all plastics biodegrade like that if exposed to UV light or weather

Re: Checking moisture in roll of filament

I getcha. Wood has that property because the plant cell walls weaken with lower moisture content; this is why flowers that need to be watered droop.
