Topic: Looking for some setup advice on a Filastruder / Filawinder.

Hi all,

I have both my Filastruder and Filawinder up and working, but now I need some help on how to best set them up under the environment I have available for them.

I need to have both on a long flat surface like a counter top or floor. According to the Filawinder documentation, having the Filastruder at a 45 degree angle or more is how it should be setup. Going with that, how high does the 45 degree angle Filastruder need to be to form a correct loop and then back up to a same height Filawinder? I'd also like suggestions on the distance between the two that goes with the height info smile.

In my case this can't end up being a permanent installation, which is why I need suggestions on what to build without doing a trial and error method. My ability to build such items is limited as well as my ability to prototype test for myself, so I'd much prefer to simply match someone else's working setup.

Here's how 2n2r5 set his up:

Thanks much, I think I can guesstimate height and distance from that shot, since I do know the size of the Filawinder board.

Looks like those are about the size of a plastic milk crate. Shipping kills decent prices on real ones, but I suspect Lowes, Menards, or Walmart would have something about the right size. If I get lucky I'll be able to find ones that can fold flat.

I think they're just laundry baskets. Cardboard boxes would probably do fine too, or stacks of textbooks, etc...

There's absolutely no way you can have any permanent place to setup? Honestly, I had the same problem when I first started but my girlfriend pointed out that we had some wall space in the kitchen. Any wall can become a permanent setup. My kitchen is well ventilated so that helps (and is recommended too). I really like the vertical mounting. I've had much better results with diameter and consistency.

Just thought I would throw the idea out there, I just know that it wasn't something that I thought of right away.

Nice looking setup dethcookie, but I can't do that because my apartments management would never let me keep it. I'm fairly sure they would have objections to me having the extruder and the winder, but since they won't be in sight that is a non issue.

I'm not allowed to put so much as a screw into the walls where I live at, change the paint, or do anything like that. The place I live at also does two inspections a year on top of the possibility I'd want them to fix something, so a wall mount isn't an option.

I thought this was a good solution.   Basically a free-standing wall that can get moved or put away-

Bummer that your apt complex is so strict. The freestanding wall above looks pretty awesome!

Re: Looking for some setup advice on a Filastruder / Filawinder.

Thanks IanJohnson, I have seen that image and I agree it's very good. Sadly I can't have that, it must be something that I can break down and put into a cupboard.

Just so you understand what I agreed to in renting this apartment, I'll share number 4 of 23 that I initialed off on.

"4. No laundry, wash or clothing is permitted to be dried or aired except in the places designated by Owner. No washing machine or other apparatus shall be used and operated on premises except those provided by Owner. No window boxes, flower boxes or other articles are permitted on the sill of any window. No clothing, wash, laundry, rugs, carpets or other articles are permitted to be placed on or hung from any part of the building."

I'm not exactly sure how a clause that has to do with window treatment got mixed in with one about forcing me to use that coin op setup that is the door next to mine (the complex has 4 of these setups per building), since there is a clause that is about window treatments, but hopefully this gives you an idea of how strict it is here.

I simply would prefer that the management has no way of knowing that I have a "pocket factory" that turns plastic pellets into usable items.

Did the owner give you a blender?  Toaster? Computer?  "Apparatus" is wide ranging and certainly includes a 3D printer.  However it sounds like they are mostly concerned about things that are likely to make the building look trashy or flood a room.  If you are a good tenant and always pay on time, I bet you would be fine with apologizing rather than asking permission.  They don't want to give you notice, kick you out, repaint and search for a new tenant who trashes the place and doesn't pay their rent reliably.

2 questions about filawinder.
How far from filastruder (min/max) ?
If filastruder gets modified for faster extrusion, will filawinder keep up ?
Say 20-40 inches per minute.

Re: Looking for some setup advice on a Filastruder / Filawinder.

Best results are maybe 18"-20" apart at minimum.  Less than that and the filament has a greater tendency to go where it wants and not where you want.  For 20"-40" you will probably need a faster motor, something like this one - http://www.ebay.com/itm/12-VOLT-70-RPM- … 19f2b04b7c

It's best to keep the RPM sized to typical extrusion speed.  A motor that is a lot faster than necessary will tend to jerk the filament around more.

Re: Looking for some setup advice on a Filastruder / Filawinder.

My version isn't as clean looking as 2n25r, but I used that setup for the inspiration. It doesn't take up much room and seems to be working much better than what I was trying before.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Does the motor just gets ON or gradually accelerates to prevent jerking, kinda like acceleration settings for  stepper motor.

Re: Looking for some setup advice on a Filastruder / Filawinder.

The motor is run by a PID routine, so the further the filament gets from the set point, the faster or slower the motor will change to adjust.  The motor speed is a number from 0-255, so for fast motors each digit is a bigger change than for slow motors.  If the PID tries to make a slight adjustment by raising the speed 3 points, a 100rpm motor is more likely to adjust too fast and overshoot than a 30rpm motor if the extrusion is slow.  Also a motor isn't going to perform as well if it has to stay in the 0-30 range the whole time because it is so much faster than extrusion.
