Topic: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

I know the Solidoodle Press was just announced and is still in preorder so there isn't much information about it but I would like some help choosing between a printer. I have extensive experience with a Makerbot Replicator 2X and I'm looking to by my own printer for college. Both printers have a decent build area(8x8x8 in) as well as heated build plates and allow for use of both ABS and PLA plastic. The Solidoodle 4 does not offer an insurance package while the Solidoodle Press does but it appears it only lasts for a single year and is non renewable. When I was using the Makerbot I had insurance and it was a pain in the neck to have to go back and forth with support just to get replacement parts. I talked to a friend who has a Solidoodle 3 who said that he has had to replace a ridiculous amount of parts on his printer. Does the Solidoodle 4 also have this maintenance problem? If I buy the Solidoodle Press and it needs to be repaired sometime after the 1 year mark is it then useless? Please help me decide which Solidoodle to buy. I'm an architecture student and don't have time to perform large amounts of maintenance but I also want a printer that will last longer than a single year. Thank you.

Re: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

I would buy the press because of the auto bed leveling.  If you don't have much time for maintenance, you will appreciate not having to spend a lot of time leveling the bed.  It can take several tries.

How soon are you planning to buy your printer?  It might be worth waiting for the SD Press reviews to come in before you pull the trigger on one.

In the same situation as you, debating between the press and the 4. However, I don't think much information about the internals of the press have been released yet; just a big black box. I might go with the 4 since it seems more upgradable as of now. Will probably wait a week or two for more press details to be released though.

Was planning on buying within a week or two. Put it this way, if I decide on the 4 I want to be able to order it within enough time to have it delivered before I leave on the 28th. That may be a good idea but currently the Press is $150 below reatail and the 4 is currently $100 off so it would be nice to save the money and put it towards filament and maintenance which is required by any 3D printer.

Leveling the bed isn't a concern as much as taking the thing apart in order to replace parts. Also Makerbot has sort of a one touch leveling feature that drives people insane so what is being advertized as making printing easier actually takes away control and could turn things into a nightmare if it constantly levels wrong.

Re: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

I'm also worried about materials. I have a roomate and 2 suitemates so I want to print in PLA so they don't complain about the smell of burning plastic synonymous with printing ABS. Unfortunately, printing with 3rd party filament voids the waranty and SoliCare. The 4 doesn't allow the purchase of SoliCare and only has a 60 day warranty and the Press has the option of purchasing one year of SoliCare insurance.

Re: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

I am honestly surprised SD didn't send out a few beta units for testing and review.  With such a vast base of knowledge and experience here I can't help but think we could help them out with issues that you know will arise.  Just think of the time, effort and money they could have saved by sending out a few machines for some real world testing by those of us that do most of their service work anyway.
Of course maybe they did do that and I am just unaware of it.  I am just looking into the future and all of the questions that are going to come up.  Every answer is going to start with "Here's how it was on the SD2,3 or 4 so maybe it is something similar".  I realize that in the world of FDM printers the basics are mostly the same but dual extruders is getting into a whole other realm.

Most likely they don't exist yet.  Explains why we can't get any other pictures or details.

Re: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

all good comments, unfortunately you have very little time on either of the 2 printers prices or availability. all older models are being discontinued as is support soon. you can still call techs for any assistance they may be able to offer during business hours but best support is places like here. the insurance/warranty is only for defective parts for 1 year on any. you pay shipping, labor etc. then if parts are available after a year you pay for that too, or just buy the next model for cheaper has been my experience.
the Press' is designed for non-technical operators like school kids and home and if unheated bed or no proper ventilation, only for PLA. which smells strong of maple syrup. a lot depends on factors like, price range, how soon needed, how technical is operator, ambient conditions to be used, which materials used, how fast prints need to finish & how accurate, how many years intended to use the printer for investment, features most wanted in printer including size of print and space for printer.
as Solidoodle is now on their 7th generation printer in under 3 years with 1st 4 generations becoming obsolete by their own words. I would be inclined to wait and see if generation 8 fits your needs better if possible, or just buy cheapest to get started then upgrade when you get through the learning curve which is at least a year. and dont go for any preparatory accessories only available from manufacturer at inflated prices. most of us here have been burned by jumping the gun then finding the same printer or better became available soon after for less cost.

Re: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

Does anyone have any opinion on which is better for me just based off information provided about the printers and information I provided about my needs? I'm fairly technical (I know how 3D printes work and have taken apart and put back together a Makerbot Replicator 2X several times) so I can easily use the S4 but is the convenience of the Press worth it for me? I'm hesitant to get something that gives me so little control but on the other hand it makes my life a lot easier because I can buy insurance and let Solidoodle worry about problems for a year. Please help me.

Bang for the buck...Press (but no forum support, yet)

The S4 is a solid platform that you could mod in the future if needed.

Re: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

Well I emailed Solidoodle asking about SoliCare insurance on the Solidoodle 4 because they don't offer it on their website and they told me that the S4 isn't a current model which probably means they will start to discontinue support for it in the coming year which is making me lean towards the Press. Any opinions? Hopefully I can pick tonight and preorder so I don't wait too long and wind up losing out on $150.

Re: Solidoodle 4 vs Solidoodle Press

refurbished and obsolete solidoodles are basically buyers problem 'as is' sale (taillight warranty). which in my opinion is much like when bought new as little help as they are. we end up doing our own repairs/mods many times using parts from 3rd party. so if you only need/want 8x8 platform buy a refurbished SD3 even for $399 use the savings to buy mods, filament etc. this is only one of the forums with many knowledgeable people for help resources. I dont even buy Solidoodles way over priced Kaptan tape or filament. for the price dif between makerbot even you could buy 1 of each model plus a Delta type from other maker. myself I do fine with my SD2 just may look at larger printer when they get better/faster if enough people want larger prints. but 1st looking for low cost powder type 3D printer for all my tiny prints without support material. one thing to look at is what model did they make the most of and likely to be lots of mods etc for. I figure slow as printing is we need at least 2-3 years use to pay for their investment b4 replacing it with another.

I was looking at the S4 and the Press because they are completely enclosed and like I said above, I have a roommate who will complain about the plastic smell. Also I would like a heated build plate and the S3 has neither. I like the capacity to be modded of the S4 but I feel I may get better use out of the Press with my tight schedule and a modable printer would be better for me when I'm not so busy with school.

If I buy the Solidoodle Press and it needs to be repaired sometime after the 1 year mark is it then useless? Please help me decide which Solidoodle to buy. I'm an architecture student and don't have time to perform large amounts of maintenance but I also want a printer that will last longer than a single year. Thank you.

IMHO this technology is a perfect example of planned obsolescence. This term is often  misunderstood and miss used.

sd has introduced  IIRC 8 models in 3 years. That mean every 3-6 months new product is introduced and old product discontinued.

most of us here have been burned by jumping the gun then finding the same printer or better became available soon after for less cost

. So when is the best time to jump in on emerging technology.  It seems 3d printing is on a curve. pre - order and save a couple hundred then the price goes up then 6 months later the price drops because a better cheaper unit is on the market.

Unfortunately this seems all too true. I did decide on the Press if anyone is interested. There's no point to buying an older model and I don't have time for the heavy maintenance the S4 requires. Hopefully the Press causes less maintenance issues. We shall see I guess.

Whenever a new design comes out, it is not always good. By that theory, there should be solid steel houses instead of wood or brick (bad analogy?). Whenever you add more features, there is a potential for more problems to arise.

I'm not bad mouthing SD or your decision, but just remember that you have ordered something with more bells and whistles than the other models - which were perfect for learning and modding. We all look forward to your results. smile

Yeah but like I said I'm a full time student an an architecture one at that so I don't have much time for modding. Thank you for the sentiments. Let us all hope this printer works nicely.
