Topic: Quick sketchup export to .stl help? E3D V6 mount

Hi, I have finally found the time to remix ward's design of the E3D V6 mount, but now sketchup is acting up.  Can anyone help me find out why I can't export as an STL?  I am attaching the sketchup file.  If I take the .skp file that he provided (the top part), and do nothing to it, I still cannot export as an stl, so I'm thinking it is something wrong with my sketchup, not the model.  I know it is water tight.  Here is a shot of the model.  Thanks!

Thanks.  I am still trying to figure out why mine exports gibberish.  It is for mounting an E3D V6 hot end on a solidoodle.

However, there seems to be a scaling issue with the stl output you posted.  It's not an inches to mm issue because 25.4 scale makes it way too big.  10x looks closer but I need to figure out what happened to the scale before it is usable.  Any guesses?  The top piece was posted by another user, and I only partially trimmed it, I did not scale any of it myself.

It was done in mm's give me 30 minutes to get back to my PC and I'll have a look.  AZERATE had a similar issue a week or so ago with a different file so I wonder if he could chime in as to a solution.

export from sketchup to dae in to cinema 4d to export as stl... the scale should be like X10 larger... well usually its what happens here....

What version of Sketch-up are you using 2014?

I've got Version 13.0.4812 so it is not 2014.  It is prompting me to upgrade when I open it but I have avoided it so far.  I forget where I got my STL export plugin but it works fine for other objects.

Just trying to sort it out with 2014 right now.  I still prefer Sketch-up 8 it always just works.

That one looks about right.  I've got it printing now and I'll compare the outside dimensions to the previous version when it is done, but it looks like there were no scaling or slicing errors.  What plugin did you use?  I think I will have to upgrade sketchup eventually, might as well get it done.

Also, I see that the inside "rim" where it grips the hot end heat sink is 5.3 mm deep while the actual dimensions from E3D's website is 6.0 mm.  Is this just because you assume most printers will slightly over extrude and it will end up about right?  If I have any slop left when this is done, I might try is again with a ~5.7mm rim.

At the time I sent the file to Tim for fit and changed according to his recommendation.  I own a v6 but really have no reason to change out my v5.  I use a Bulldog XL so even when I do switch to the v6 I have a completely different mount system for the hot end.
I use team Sketchup's stl exporter that was originally developed by Jim Foltz.

Just fixed my problem. I found that my personal issue was that the stl plugin either became corrupt and purged by the system, I accidentally removed the file (highly doubtful), or it grew legs and walked back to Google land. smile
I always prefer 8, but have 2013 installed as well....don't ask why.  smile

Anyway, I had the issue of whenever I attempted to export the stl, once the file directory window popped up, the File Type was blank, thus making it impossible to find the stl since it was saved without a ".xyz" If this is your issue, you will have to reinstall the plugin here: http://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/sketchup-stl

Before clicking download on the Sketchup site, follow the steps I numbered.
1) Click windows tab in the program.
2) Click preferences.
3) Click extensions.
4) Make sure the stl export plugin box is checked.

Away you go! I have successfully saved and exported a basic shape, and only once since this fix, but it is now working again for the first time in about 2-3 weeks.

Thanks.  I just messed around with sketchup for a while and I got 2014 with the stl exporter working.  Here is a version of the mount with the bracket and Azerate's wire guide loop.  I printed one of the original ones I linked and noticed that I messed it up and little and the circle on the bracket end was in the wrong spot, so that has been fixed.  If you still want one of the originals with the wire loop, let me know and I'll make it at work tomorrow.  Once I am done with these, you can add them to the thingiverse page or I will add it and credit you and wade.  Disclaimer is that I have not printed the attached file yet because it is time for some sleep. 

PS: my next project is an undercarriage mount for the lawsy carriages that will hold the servo motor needed for the auto bed leveling upgrade.  I really hope I can get that working.
