Topic: solidoodle 3? possible buyer.

Hello everyone. I'm very interested in purchasing a 3d printer, but I had a couple questions. I understand that solidoodle isn't necessarily plug and play even though it comes put together, but I was wondering how much work really needs to be done to get it working well. My second question is once you do get it working well, does it print consistently? Like does it have to be calibrated often or just once?

Re: solidoodle 3? possible buyer.

I will throw in my $0.02 a caravat  I am new to this game as well.  I have a new to me sd 4 which I believe is the same as the sd4 but a real case and a couple minor improvements.
When I  was doing my research a friend that does 3-d printing warned me these things can be fiddly. that goes for any hobby level 3-d printer.
you need to calibrate the extruder level the bed set the Z home switch so the first layer prints on the bed not above it and learn the software and settings.

As far as stability I have only had my machine a week . But as with any device things can loosen and need to be adjusted. belts will stretch over time etc.
A good working knowledge of the 3-Cartesian plane is a must.
also unless you plan to uses canned parts you need a knowledge of parametric design software.
IMHO cubify invent is a good value for $50 and you can try before you buy for 14 days.

I know there are a couple people on this forum that are frustrated owners right now. so do your homework and check the pros and con on the various brands.

Re: solidoodle 3? possible buyer.

I bought a SD2 when they launched.  It did print out of the box, but it did better when it was tweaked and calibrated some.  There are basic calibrations (simple one) that will need to be when you change filament and such. But they are not too hard.  Would I buy it again, yes but I would go with the bigger bed.  Don't know about other printers, but with the SD and this forum, you can find all the help you will need to keep it running and printing better.  Now i just would they would increase their bed size to 12x12x12 with dual extruders, then I would buy another one for sure.

Nice!!! now just get those dimensions up to that 12 x 12 x 12 and you'll really have something.
Seriously though,  It is nice to see it being marketed for what it is.  A machine designed to be tweaked and modded.

Yes.

Also: SoliPrint was an accidental leak. It's not going to be released for a little while. There should be beta testing soon, but it's meant for Solidoodle Press users more than WorkBench users. It is a highly simplified interface for newer users.

Still *lots* of kinks to work out.

Re: solidoodle 3? possible buyer.

Long timey, no posty.  My antique SD2 still works, still at 0.3mm (never bothered to go 0.1mm since I was more after build speed than that level of precision), but reading about the new Workbench in various news releases today.

Self-calibrated and stock glass bed sound awesome.

Is the primary purpose of the dual-extruder for two-color printing (integrated in same part), or dual-chemistry (e.g. PLA supports on ABS), and if so how is that managed?  Or is it just to do 2 identical parts at once?

It's up to you. Slic3r/RH still only provide basic dual extruder support, but you could do all of the above with it.

Hey John,
I noticed crickets once I mentioned a different board wink
Can you at least give a few details on the board that is provided.

The Press will have a new motherboard.

The WorkBench models will have modified "Solidoodle Motherboard" boards. We aren't offering any other flavors of motherboard at the moment. If there's a large amount of demand, I suppose we might consider it, but I wouldn't count on it in the medium term future.
