Topic: solidoodle 3 case thickness

Hello, I'm new here! I want to know how thick the sheet metal for SD3's case is. And also, is it steel?
I've searched around but can't find an answer. Thanks in advance.

Why do you ask? Trying to make your own?

Thanks! It looks thinner on the pictures, maybe it's the angle.

Re: solidoodle 3 case thickness

It is definitely steel, since it is magnetic.

Re: solidoodle 3 case thickness

Yeah, I think SD2 uses steel as well. Is it 1/16 in though?

Re: solidoodle 3 case thickness

It's either 1/16th, or 1.5mm, I just don't have calipers on hand right now (upstairs...sorry.) Well, now that I've said that, I'm looking and it could as well be 1mm, it's pretty damn thin.

This is fine because as a frame it's great. But the part near the Y-motor could benefit from being thicker, if you want to have the Y-axis motor very tight (which also requires a pillow-block upgrade.)

I saw a picture of a person standing on it, so it must be strong enough.

Re: solidoodle 3 case thickness

Sure, you can stand on it, that is no problem.   It's a question of certain directions of strength. A tight Y-axis motor will yank upward with only the plate thickness and (essential) contribution from the corner, however, it will bend a little inward and upward from the side away from the backwall (the unsupported side.

not a big deal, Just that it could be better. Best solution if you wanted would probably be to screw something in from the backwall to keep the Y-axis level. Or deal with it being bent and overtime potentially wearing the belt (my y-axis driving belt is pretty worn down but still 100% functional and having gone through many many hours over two years. Kind of wish I had kept track somehow.)

Re: solidoodle 3 case thickness

thanks Tomek. If i do get the SD3, i expect to tinker with it quite a bit.

Re: solidoodle 3 case thickness

Steel. I measured 1mm, but it could be an imperial gauge close to 1mm rather than true metric sheet. For all intents and purposes I think you could presume it's 1mm thick. EDIT: Closer to 1.2mm

Yes, that's pretty thin - I sliced my thumb open on it once trying to pull a y rail out. Yet again, doing too much too late in the evening! smile

Also, it's amazing what a folded sheet metal part can do. There's usually a lot of 1mm sheet in car bodies, for example...

SD3. Mk2b + glass, heated enclosure, GT2 belts, direct drive y shaft, linear bearings, bowden-feed E3D v5 w/ 0.9° stepper
