Topic: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Hey people,

Just thought I'd share the Hadron build I'm constructing at the moment.
The idea was to get a printer that has the stability needed to create large pieces accurately enough for my prop construction needs.
The Solidoodle 2 was ok but really didn't cope well with the constant use I put it through.

After about 30 minutes of working out how things went together.

And after futzing around with the Z screws for about an hour trying to get them to go on equally.
I have a sneaking suspicion they may be slight bent, or perhaps the mounts were out of alignment.

I have noticed a few little dents in the Makerslide as well. Dunno if it's going to be a problem.

Still waiting for the PSU and Helios heated bed to show up.
Oh and the Hotend will be the Prometheus thing that Eric had an crowdfunding campaign for, hopefully it'll lob by the time it's all ready to go, failing that I'll just use the ALU-Hotend I've got sitting around here until it shows.

As for the Firmware for the RAMPS I'm still quite unsure, but I'm learning tongue

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Well after all this time it makes an excellent coffee warming device.
Perhaps a little bit overpriced, but very effective.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Serin,

Looks like a nice build!

Interesting that it uses 2 separate stepper motors for the Z travel...I would think that they would eventually get out of sync.  Are they belted or otherwise mechanically indexed to each other somehow?

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Hey,

Not that I'm aware of, they don't even share drivers in the configuration I'm using them in as they pulled far too much out of just the single driver for me to be able to work with.
The trick so far has been getting them aligned on start up so they travel equal distances.

And now thanks to the efforts of Adrian, God of compiled HEX files I have a functioning extruder!

Just need to calibrate the end stops now then it should be ready for print calibration.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

That is an awesome setup, I must say. Bulldog...E3D/Prometheus...dual Z...
Who's envious? This guy...:D

But I never cared for coffee. I'm much more of an excessive Red Bull/Rockstar guy myself.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

I was going for perfection when I ordered tongue
Massive props to Adrian for his spacer idea on the extruder carriage, it allows for extra Z depth which is quite handy given my proclivity for tall prints.

Oh and it's not an E3D, just one of RRD's Hexagonal hotends, tis a stand-in until the prometheus arrives.

I think it's come in at just about $1200(including Aussie exchange rates) which I must say I'm quite pleased with.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

$AUD1k ($USD850) should get you the *full* kit landed if you keep up with the coupons that can be offered wink

I also would suggest that going with a Rumba and the Graphics display can be a better choice on the electronics side. They do/did have a kit for that setup - I'll go and hassle Elvira and make sure its up there again if its not already.

Should check where they are at with the Trapz Screw upgrade too... they be much nicer than the 8mm standard rods.

If anyone is about to purchase one - do send me an email wink

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Indeed, my extra couple of hundred was the Helios, shipping and a conglomeration of other crap that's gone into the build.

Speaking of, does anyone else have issues with loading the Bulldog?
Something is probably misaligned in there, but buggered if I can work out what.
Works if I take out the springs completely and slide the filament into the hotend, but it can't find the mark without manually stuffing around.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Yep, depends on the filament.  I don't pull the springs though,  just squeeze it some to open things up.  You got me thinking about my next build with this post.  I'm excited to see how it works out for you.  If you think loading filament is a pain just wait till your first jam which although is very rare it's a PITA.  Keep up the good work.

Thanks to all for your contributions

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

I just stick it in the top and use manual advance to pull it through. No need to touch tension or squeeze it...

11

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Yeah, that's what I've been attempting to do, evidently the filament has trouble finding the hole in the brass screw in the hotend.
Probably need to move it up a little so it sits against the bulldogs one.

Oh, and just in case, any news on the Endstops, Adrian?
Being so close to printing yet so far is having deleterious effects on my state of mind:P Eye twitches etc etc.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

It looks like you have a bent Z rod, which I also got.  Nag them about sending a new one, or ask to buy the trapezoidal screw, which is what I did.  In the meantime, have a look at this- http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:42658

Once I had the Z sorted out, I was amazed at how perfect my prints were at 150mm/s without any fuss.

14

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Yeah, I did attempt to get a replacement, evidently BubbleRep on IRC wasn't in the mood to be generous even after about a week of trying to get his attention.
Do you think said IRC is the best way to ask to buy the trapezoidal screw? Or should I email them?

In the meantime, yep I'll be printing off the anti-wobble systems and testing each of them over the next few days

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Try email, open a ticket, maybe Adrian can send a note for you, since the listen to him.

The anti-wobble worked for me, but because it rides along the track in the side of the extrusion, I had to come up with a way to mount the Z endstop in the front groove.  It also meant I couldn't use the nifty clips that hold the power supply onto one of the vertical rails.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Send an email - since it gets to a wider audience. BubbleRep can get snowed under - but he normally does eventually get back to you if you PM him

If you've still not heard anything, I'll follow up when I next speak to them later in the week.

They dont need to be really even btw - the dual z drivers cope just fine - feel free to slide the motors in and out etc. Just need to be straight which is easiest achieved measuring at 3 points along the screw with the x-carriage in the midpoint.

Best way to test if one is really bent is simply remove it and roll it on a flat surface. If its really genuinely bent, they will fix it for you.

But a trapz upgrade is definitely the better option.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Aye aye, shall get on that after coffee is achieved.

As to the bentness.. yeah, it's definitely bent.

Thought I'd try out some PLA.
Ben at ModFab is quite possibly my favourite out the Aussie lot so far.

Btw, do those speeds and the resultant print speed seem normal to you guys?

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Ok, time for some pix now that I've worked out the differences between operating a solidoodle and operating the OrdBot.

This time I've used my Halo helmet as a demonstration of the differences in quality and print accuracy.

Below is an ABS print from the Soli and next to it in the transparent is a PLA print from the Bot.
I did hit the ABS print with some sand paper, but the edges I left alone to make sure it joined up with the connecting parts.
It seems to me that the OrdBot does a much better job of the finer points in the part, which is of course why I bought the damned thing tongue
Even the support material is of much better quality.
That said I still do need to rig up a proper fan cooling system for the extruder carriage to make sure it's all setting correctly.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Looks like this will be my next printer!

Would anyone care to post a BOM of what would be needed / preferred for the electronics, extruder, hot end(E3D of course), and anything else that does not come with the kit?

I went to the ReprapDiscount site and as decent of a job that they do to tell what is not included, I must admit that I lack the electronic savvy to figure out the best options...

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Yo,
So the gear on mine here is as follows:
Bulldog XL extruder - RRD.
Helios heated bed - Panucatt.
Hexagonal hotend - RRD.
12V 400W Power Supply - FleaBay.
Collection of various gauge hookup cable. (I also got the professional cabling set from RRD)
25mm spacers for the extruder carriage.
Shower flexihose for the cabling to keep it clean.
Endstop holders if you wish to use the Hall endstops along with the mechanicals. Can be found on Thingiverse.

It should be noted that the E3D won't fit in through the stock extruder holder.
Might also be worth finding a source of makerslide local to you as in my experience RRD isn't so great at actually answering support tickets about dented extrusion.
There's also been talk of swapping out the RAMPS for a RUMBA as said replacement is actually quite a bit better.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Thanks Serin!

Beside the mechanicals, do you have to flash specialized firmware to the board, etc?  I've seen a lot of references to configuration.h files and such, but don't really know what I'll be facing...

Yup, indeed you do.
Adrian here on the forum helped(a lot) with mine.
As the OrdBot can be built slightly differently depending on ones configuration it's a little bit of a case-by-case thing.

Re: Ord bot Hadron build - RepRapDiscount kit

Thanks again!  One more question:

Mechanicals and Extruder / Hotend (E3D) I'm good with my understanding...

Regarding the Electronics; it's hard to tell exactly what you are getting with the RUMBA or RAMPS...i.e. do they come with the drivers?

I guess the shorter question is:  What electronics package should I get that includes EVERYTHING I would need to be able to print?

Sorry for being so lame with this end of things...hope to learn it a little better!
