Topic: Purple glue stick

I haven't seen anything about this posted. I recommend you all go buy some purple elders glue stick (must be purple). Makes prints stick fantastic. And easy to remove when they cool. Most of the time they pop off themselves. I put it on with a freshly cleaned bed and apply when Cold or slightly warm. You don't need much. I've had problems when trying to put new layers over old glue. Clean off your glass and reapply. Let me know how it works for you. Enjoy

Re: Purple glue stick

Does it need re-applying every print?

Re: Purple glue stick

Even if it does, these glue sticks are as common as they come.  Standard Elementary School kit so they go on sale every year before school starts.  I think I have a half dozen set aside for my kids for next year alone...

Re: Purple glue stick

The Davinci shipped with a glue stick in the box for this. I've been very pleasantly surprised at how well it works! Much more consistent than hairspray was in the SD3. I'll probably switch to that on the Solidoodle too, after I finish some mods.

Edit: It wasn't Elmer's purple, just generic... Uhu brand, IIRC, and plain white.

Re: Purple glue stick

I've gotten away with a few prints, but the the layer gets attached to the part. Washes off easily. It's not woth the hassle not to clean and reapply. Simple wet paper towel followed with a dry one takes it off. Plus it turns purple again when wet so you can see if you missed anything! The stuff is dirt cheap. I recommend laying down 1 layer of parallel lines, on bigger prints maybe another layer perpendicular to the first can help with potential peeling though usually not needed.

I've applied it hot but it gets blobs when it melts. Haven't done it on anything but glass on my doodle and the airwolf HD we have at work (their engineer told me about this).

Use the purple stuff. It has a compound in it the other doesn't. Can't remember what it is, but apparently it's used in professional grade printers for adhesion.  Though other brands may have it in their whites. I'm so pleased with the Elmer's I probably won't bother to experiment

If you are using anything else you are wasting your time IMO. Most prints when the glass has literally POP off. The first time I was there when it happened I thought my cheapo picture frame glass shattered.

Re: Purple glue stick

I assume this conversation is about ABS?

PLA has no problem sticking, of course

7

Re: Purple glue stick

Abs and works well with nylons too though I have not done as much with that.

Re: Purple glue stick

I couldn't find the purple, but found Elmers Washable SchoolGlue Stick All Purpose Clear.  It works great.  I get several prints before I need to re-apply.

Re: Purple glue stick

Thanks for the tip!  Works great!  I think I can retire my acetone ABS mix and all the thoughts about whether the fumes can be ignited by the extruder.  Between prints, I find I can just take a glue brush dipped in water and redistribute the remaining glue on the glass and go.  Going to try to make a dilute mix in a bottle so I can brush it on (the stick tends to apply a thick coat).

Re: Purple glue stick

This is the #1 solution for getting parts to stick!!!!   Fantastic results everytime and the bottom of the parts are perfectly flat no matter if they are large or small with absolutely no curling on the edges!  Totally awesome!  Clean-up couldn't be easier either.

When my build plate reaches 60c the parts magically pop off with one finger...... I let it cool a little more and then apply another thin layer of the glue stick (sometimes that is even not necessary) and I am back to printing!

I have found that it MUST be Purple Elmers glue stick however.  You are absolutely right on that point.

THANKS for the hint!!!!!!!!

Re: Purple glue stick

I would like to note that after testing on a few prints, including a 12-hr most-of-the-bed job, I've found Bostik Blu-Stik (e.g. http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/offi … g-bo245062 to be quite acceptable also.

Re: Purple glue stick

Aha, thx, i have access to Kaplon tape and glas on work, guess i can remove the kaplon layer on the bed, lay the glass whit kaplon tape on it, if that dosent hold the model i will try the clue upon the kaplon tape

Keep the Kapton on the bed. Then you can spray the bottom of the glass it hairspray and not have to use clips.
No Kapton is required on the glass surface.

Re: Purple glue stick

Ok, believed that the tape would prevent the heat from the bed to reach the glass.

17

Re: Purple glue stick

If that were the case how would the heat get through the tape and to the print itself?
In order
1. Bed
2. Kapton tape
3. Hairspray
4. Glass
5. Lite mist of hairspray

Printit Industries Model 8.10 fully enclosed CoreXY, Chamber heat
3-SD3's & a Workbench all fully enclosed, RH-Slic3r Win7pro, E3D V6, Volcano & Cyclops Hot End
SSR/500W AC Heated Glass Bed, Linear bearings on SS rods. Direct Drive Y-axis, BulldogXL
Thanks to all for your contributions

Yes. I've used "UHU stic" and it works as well as the Purple Elmo's. I've also tried some flavors of NOT permanent glue sticks and found those do not work. My working theory is you have to use a permanent type of glue stick, but I haven't tested the theory on everything that's out there, so I can't say for sure.

If you can't find a local source where you are, look on Amazon. You should be able to find bulk packs for a LOT less per stick than you pay retail and have it shipped right to your door without having to burn up four buck a gallon gas hunting for it. One of the brands of purple glue sticks on Amazon runs around .35 per stick in a bulk pack. If those work the same as the over priced Elmo's (I haven't tested any yet) I'd be curious to know if anyone has tried generic flavors of the Elmo's stuff and how it works.

One tip on applying glue stick: Put it down when the bed is cool. It the bed is too warm, it makes a big fat mess.

Re: Purple glue stick

There is already a new product. My company ProCoPrint3D in cooperation with the University of Gent department of chemistry of polymers developed a new formula for the adhesive to 3D printing. This is not another hair spray with relabelled as in the case of similar products. PROGLU3D is a patented formula and now conduct tests for most materials. Glue PROGLU3D has three versions: PROGLU3D-PLA, PROGLU-ABS and PROGLU3D-UNIVERSAL. Glue the PLA achieved excellent adhesion when printing with hard materials derived PLA and Flexi and Ninjaflex, ABS is like the name says to print derivative ABS and Universal to be used for all materials. Universal and PLA-based polymers and water dilutable. Product for ABS is no longer flammable agent. The printed elements are easily stripped from the printed surface after cooling table, and the adhesive layer is reusable until the damaged mechanically. We have also obtained low temperatures prints and for the PLA is from 30/70 degrees and for ABS about 70/90 degrees, of course, the product is also suitable for printing at higher temperatures. Below are some photos of the tests, and one of them carried on board Stratasys Fortus 250 for printing of ABS where platforms are suitable for recycling after one print. Using our adhesive means may be printed several times without damage to the print and the platform. More details on our website www.ProCoPrint3D.eu

Re: Purple glue stick

sorry, but that is ridiculously expensive. 35 euros for 250ml (38 & change USD for roughly 8 oz)??? Really?

Why would I spend that much money on something when there are WAY cheaper alternatives that work just fine available to me? I would much rather spend my money on actual filament than on a "glue", thanks.

FWIW, an 11 oz can of Aqua Net Super Extra Hold hairspray costs about $2.00 (USD) or 325 ml for 1.79 euros...
Much more affordable....and it works!
