Topic: estimating at end of roll

I am finally seeing the spindle of my first roll of filament.  Now I'm wondering just how much I have left, and what I dare print with it before it runs out.  Any thoughts about estimating lengths, both of remaining filament, and of print jobs?  Are the lengths given by Slic3r to be trusted?
