Topic: How did you guys adress the spool-mounting issue?

I've seen designs of different kinds of spool mounts out there, but none that solves the REAL problem, that is, the plastic threads will spontaneously spasm out of their spools and tangle themselves up into anything that's near. Especially the red one... Odd.
To solve it you'd need something that encapsulates the entire spool so the threads will have no place to spasm out to, but that'd just look silly like a giant wheel. How do people live with this behaviour? On a good day I can walk out from my printer but some days (like today, hence this post) I need to babysit it and un-tangle it every 5-10 minutes.

I've actually never had that problem to any large extent, especially once I've used a bunch of filament off the spool and it is no longer so close to the edge. I'm pretty sure that even with a full spool, if I were to cutout some cardboard circles a couple of inches bigger in diameter than the spool I could stick them on either side and put a stop to the rare entanglements. I use this spool holder, and perhaps the ball bearings help keep the tension down:

P.S. Has thingiverse gotten really really slow for everyone else the last few days?

Try this http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:31317 This solved a lot of my problems thanks to Lawsy design.
Here is what mine looks like now  http://www.thingiverse.com/make:58469  I have added another piece to keep the holder at a fixed distant that is not shown.

Re: How did you guys adress the spool-mounting issue?

Here is my low-tech design.

My spool is up on roller bearing cradles, and there's a bunch of little boxes stacked behind it.  I just wedged a birthday card between some of the boxes behind it, and it's pressing on top.  The pressure is good enough to keep the filament from spilling over the sides, yet light enough to allow the spool to rotate freely on the roller cradle.

This one looks promising! If it still misbehaves I'll try with the cardboard as Claghorn suggested.
Thanks!

Here is my current setup.

The brackets (green/white) off the SD2 are my own (crude) design.  The Purple bar is modified Lawsy design. the white and purple rings are from http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:116872  The Yellow bar is used to keep the lawsy holder from moving any closer to the case. It has a small magnetic in the end to keep it in place.

Re: How did you guys adress the spool-mounting issue?

I'm using Lawsy's filament guide but retained the original spool holder so it is mounted like this http://www.thingiverse.com/make:45017

It proved to be effective so far, I found that a perpendicular mounted spool causes Y-axis belt strain due to the increased force required to pull the filament.
