Topic: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

Hi All,

I mentioned in one of my posts that I thought my v2 pelletizer might be overbuilt. This got me thinking that a 3D printed version might be possible and was worth a try. To my surprise it holds together well and performs as well as the metal frame version 2. The complete build instructions and STL files can be  found here on Thingiverse:

Here is the Youtube video of v3 in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfibqeoQEpw

Very cool!

Have you thought about using some printed gears to eliminate the need for a separate feed motor?  I've been experimenting with my own worm and pinion gears for my own pelletizer and winder projects, and found them fun to design and surprisingly functional.  I used gearing to feed filament into my own meat-grinder based pelletizer, which I also drive with a drill when i have a large amount of filament to chop.

Your design seems more robust than mine (since it doesn't have metal-to-metal contact) and well suited for this if you extend the shaft holding the hobbed gear so it can line up with the shaft of the forstner bit, and maybe add a pair of gears (with about a 4:1 step-down ratio I would guess).   I may give it a shot myself if this isn't a direction you think would be worthwhile, but I really like what you've done.

tealvince,

I have not thought of adding the geared feed that you mention. Great idea though. I like your chopper version and thought it showed a lot of creative thinking on your part. Your version is greener than mine. If the power goes out you are still chopping away and I am not.

Yeah, but chopping a lot of filament gets pretty tiring and the result would probably be like and old Simpson's episode where Homer is given a single barbell and gets super buff only in one arm (and uses it to swindle folks in arm wrestling).

For longer jobs I have been attaching a drill to the end using a socket bit, which works pretty well except for the maiming threat of a handle spinning around at high speed smile

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

Hi All,

One thing that I forgot to mention in the posted article was that I also pelletized 1.75 mm filament and it worked just as well. So the 3 mm hole will accommodate both 3 mm and 1.75 mm filament. There is no need to drill a another bolt with a 1.75 mm hole.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

This may seem like a dumb question but I've never used one of the 12v gears before.  How do you adjust the speed of the motor?  Is there something on the motor to adjust or do you vary the voltage?  I can't see from the video how you have it hooked up.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

hi wahada
about bearing?
608z ?

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

bbriggsgeek,

In my opinion there is no such thing as a dumb question.
I varied the voltage with a variable power supply that
I built from plans. So all you need is a power supply that regulates
the output voltage and puts out enough amps to handle the load.
Here is nice one that you can get on eBay for $39.99 with free shipping.
This is very similar to the one that I built.
It will put out 2 amps which is more than enough to handle a small
motor that probably draws only 0.15 amps under load:

A voltage supply  like this is great to have around for many uses. I have used it
countless times over the years for many different projects.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

fredaxe,

Sorry, but I don't know which bearing you are asking about.
There is no  " 608z " number in the parts list.
Please recheck the number and be more specific on what
you want to know about it and I will be happy to answer
your question.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

Hi wahada,

Is this a unit you could custom make for someone like myself if the price was right? I'm looking for a pelletizer.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

Hi imbhcanada,

I appreciate the interest in the pelletizer but I have too many other projects
in the works to find any time to produce them. Although it seems to perform very well,
it is still a prototype and not a proven design. Maybe some other people on this forum
reading this post would be willing to help you with that. I would have no objection
to that.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

hi wahada
which bearing do you use to fit in the pelletizer frame?
thx

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

Hi fredaxe,

Two -  FR6-2RS Flanged Bearings 3/8" x 7/8" Chrome Steel, ABEC 3.

These are the exact ones I bought on eBay:

could you  post yours prod  stl in mm ,please?

thanks

Excellent version!
Can you post a video of it in action?

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

hi wahada
not yet  because i'm waiting  a 12v  motor gear 200rpm from china
actally a 12 v motor gear 3 rpm  cut very small pellet  0.7mm!
of course when i'll receive it!

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

What kind of motor are you using to spin the bit?

That doesn't look the same - he's asking about the one spinning the cutter.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

With the filament feeding system, you used a bold.  Why did you use a bold instead of just having a hole in the frame?

24

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

You need metal for the forstner to shear against. You'd wear the printed frame quickly. You can get vented bolts from McMaster, no need to drill one.

Re: 3D Printed Filament Pelletizer v3

Thanks, I was wondering if that was the case.
