Topic: Printer Rattling?

Hey all,

Just wondering if this is normal or not, but my printer makes a rattling noise but I cant seem to put my finger on what is making the noise. Anyone elses printer rattle? If it is normal thats fine, im just not sure.

Cheers.

Re: Printer Rattling?

Yes, mine will rattle depending on the type of movements and direction. To be somewhat expected as far as I am concerned since you are forcing the axis to make quick short movements and quick changes in direction.
I did have a slight gap with the white guide blocks for the left hand guide rail which I minimized by loosening the screw for the bottom white block and twisting it slightly. This seems to help a bit with the rattle for me.

Re: Printer Rattling?

I had some rattling in one of my printers also.  It took a while to find it, but eventually I narrowed it down to the left Y-axis guide rod.  I tightened the hose clamp on the back and it took the rattle out.

I've also noticed the extruder assembly has begun rattling front to back when printing.  I agree that the white block looks like it slips slightly over time and with use.

Best way to find it is to listen closely, then feel for the vibration on different areas until you find it.  Be careful not to burn yourself, though!

Thanks for the info guys. I'll keep listening closer to it and see if I can find it.

The clamps are often loose. Did you find the problem?

Nah, I haven't found it. My printer has been broken more often than not since I posted this.

Well we'd be happy to help you get it up and running again.

Re: Printer Rattling?

I emailed support and they rather helpfully told me to just be persistent with trying to clear the clog. I gave up after trying to clear it for hours and ordered a new nozzle, barrel, heater and some new filament (which i believe was the cause of all my issues in the first place) from a local company who have been very helpful. I cant clean all of the ABS out of the threads on both the barrel and the nozzle no matter what I try. The new parts should arrive on Monday I hope.

We're always here to help. If it didn't work out with the clog, we can always send you a new nozzle.

Thanks for the offer.

Re: Printer Rattling?

the noise is definitely coming from the print carriage, but i can't put my finger (literally) on what it is. The white block is pretty solidly held in place, the jigsaw also has everything tight in it, so im at a loss as to what else it could be.

Re: Printer Rattling?

Also solidoodlesupport,

I managed to get the hot end cleared and back together, but it wont last another teardown. I ended up buying a new hot end from BilbyCNC. Heres hoping everything works out when I put it together.

Re: Printer Rattling?

My printer has recently developed a rattle when printing and over the past week has become louder.
What I found was that the X carriage that supports the white guide blocks, for the rear X guide rod, has cracked.
As a result there is a large gap between the white guide blocks and the rear X guide rod.
The part of the X carriage assembly that supports the nut for the screw for the lower white guide block has cracked.
I am contacting Support to see what they say.

So if you have a rattle in your extruder carriage assembly check for the possibility of having this issue.

Re: Printer Rattling?

Helmut, can you post a picture? I have some increased rattling and want to compare

I am having a increased 'rattle' in mine as well and even though the white block seems tight I do see a crack in the carriage near the white block.

I hate to continue grumbling but this just adds to the list of issues that I am having and support replys "we'll get right on fixing your issues", but that is as far as it gets, talk and no action.

I do love using the machine even with its issues but I'm thinking that it will have functioning longevity about the same as the Yugo, and we all (or maybe not) remember those. smile

Even with all the fun spots, if I had to do this whole experience over again I would pass and look in another direction..... IMHO

Here's a pic of the crack in my x carriage lower guide block support area.
I am going to put a small hose clamp around the cracked area to secure it for now.

Re: Printer Rattling?

I had a similar strange rattle... took me ages to find it. The fan on the extruder stepper motor has a bunch of washers on the two bolts. One of those bolts got a bit loose and it turned into a mini-maraca.

Well my fan's already grinding like food processor so I'll check this too when I pull it off. sad

Ouch, ya that looks a little rough.

Re: Printer Rattling?

Just for anyone who comes across this thread with the same issue, it was the white blocks on both the x and y axis. i unscrewed them, rotated them to tighten them up, no more horrible noises! Thanks to everyone for their help in finding it.

I used straight acetone on the crack and clamped the broken carriage over night.
Put it back together the next day and have printed about 20 hours worth so far and it is holding up for now.
It solved my rattle too.

Re: Printer Rattling?

Good to hear! Can we get a picture of the part post-fix?

Here's a pic of my repaired lower guide block x carriage assembly.
I also put a washer under the lower guide block mounting nut so it has more of the carriage assembly to clamp against. Had to file the edges of the washer down so it would fit in the countersink in the x carriage for the nut.
