Topic: Solidoodles open for public beta

We are doing a soft launch of our Solidoodles 3D model sharing platform today. This is a very basic version of the site, with some of the intended features still missing. At this point you will be able to sign up, and use all of the available features. The CSS, and some of the functionality needs some work, but we are working on it every day.

We will be taking suggestions from everyone for ideas for the site.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have about the site here. We are open to new ideas!

I (solijohn) am the creator of the site, and will be implementing most any change that is requested.

We have been doing a private beta of the site on soliforum for a little while, and a public subforum should be available soon.

Re: Solidoodles open for public beta

Awesome!  I will add some of my models to this!

edit: Just a heads up, at least some of the thumbnails are currently broken.  I downloaded a "Paperclip" model with a picture of the spool holder on its page, and it is indeed a paperclip once printed.

Re: Solidoodles open for public beta

The only thing I have noticed is some of the items do not seem to be in the correct category. One nice feature would be to have the ability for posters to be able to state any potential printing issues or even suggest things like printing in .1, .2 or .3. or difficulty. Since solidoodle has 2 bed sizes, it might be good to flag if a piece is over 6" so someone know to scale.
If this is open to the general public, it would be nice to keep different printing technologies separate like fdm, sls, sla, laser cut etc.

Re: Solidoodles open for public beta

I'm still stuck in limbo... I'm waiting for the confirmation email which hasn't arrived in the last half hour, but I am hopeful.

I hope that those STLs that have been helping upgrade and perfect the Solidoodle go up on Solidoodles very quickly! smile

I think the font color and size on the categories page is hard to read.

I edit my posts a lot.

Re: Solidoodles open for public beta

I would really like to see stl files for the printable parts on the Solidoodles.
Seems like it would be better for SD to offer its users the option to pay per print instead of charging an outrageous shipping cost and therefore taking focus off their products and future designs to print and/or store the carriages and spool holders.
My 2 cents.

Printit Mason and Printit Horizon printers
Multiple SD2s- Bulldog XL, E3D v5/v6/Lite6, Volcano, Hobb Goblin, Titan, .9 motor, Lawsy carriages, direct Y drive, fishing line...the list goes on
Filawinder and Filastruder #1870.....worth every penny!

It's only a matter of time before Apple buy makerbot, then force users to print-via-itunes with DRM-protected models in a proprietary format. tongue

SD3. Mk2b + glass, heated enclosure, GT2 belts, direct drive y shaft, linear bearings, bowden-feed E3D v5 w/ 0.9° stepper
Smoothieboard via Octoprint on RPi

It would also give some goodwill faith to this solidoodles project, which is otherwise just an imitation of ultimaker's and makerbot's file sharing sites (thingiverse and youmagine)

That said, I'm far less interested in solidoodle stock parts than I was when the doodle first came out, since at this point users have replicated every solidoodle part and often with substantially superior replacements.

TLDR; solidoodle! You are great for getting me into this [3d printing] with a drive at the time for low-cost, but sometimes you could be nicer about sharing.
