It works because the replicator style bed is a platform supported across two arms.  To to this in a SD you would need a new Z platform.

or cut a hole in the center of the z plate frame wink size would be limited but for small things certainly doable.

Cool idea.  Seems simple enough after someone has shown the way.  Im sure a platform mod or entirely new platform would enable it for the Solidoodle.
