Topic: scan and print

I scaned in my kids using my Kinect and printed them as bobble heads for the grandparents, I think they came out pretty well :-)

Re: scan and print

That's very cool !! smile

Can you expand a bit on how you interfaced the Kinect and what software you used?

To print or, 3D print, that is the question...

Re: scan and print

It's pretty cake with the right software, I tried reconstructme and skanect to do the actual scanning.  I was getting better scans with skanect so I bought the pro version because both have free tries but they are limited. All you need to use the Kinect with the PC is some drivers which can be found online.   The hard part was taking it into meshmixer and cleaning up and filling holes from the scans.

Thanks, I'll look into Skanect.

Re: scan and print

I have Kinect for windows too and use Skanect. I have had pretty good luck so far.Now I am waiting for kinect 2 for windows to be released. MS says about May.

Re: scan and print

Why?  what does Kinect 2 do that the original doesn't?

Re: scan and print

Oh yes I can't wait for the kinetic 2 to be ready for PC use.  The higher fidelity will be great!

Re: scan and print

Looks like I'm going to connect the Kinect to my PC today and try one of these apps.

Re: scan and print

Those bobbleheads do look nice. I scanned my daughter and son-in-law about a year ago and printed their heads for their wedding cake. I used a Kinect and Reconstructme to do the job. Reconstructme is kind of finickey but I was able to get good scans and clean them up nice. I had a friend clean them up and paint them and they really turned out great. I posted a pic a while back.

I spoke to the folks at   http://www.3d-filaments.com/  friday. They said they would have a flesh color filament in this week and a whole new  line of flament

Re: scan and print

After futzing around with Kinect and kScan, ReconstructMe and Scenect, for a whole weekend, I've come to the realization that, for the type of scanning I want to do, I need a turntable/laser based model.

The resulting scans produced with the Kinect are just too coarse and devoid of small details to be of any use to me.  Additionally, this type of scanner is better suited for scanning a "live" scene with large objects, such as a room, and rely on the camera to capture color information to provide the missing detail (the texture).  The mesh itself leaves a lot to be desired.

So until I can afford a scanner like the Makerbot Digitizer (or even the MatterForm 3Dscanner), or until such time prices fall to a more affordable level, I think I'll put 3D scanning on the backburner.

Re: scan and print

Kinect/xtion  can do scan of a shoe box or bigger... if you want to scan scan something smaller, you need something else...

i'm not impress by makerbot digitizer result (you can see some in thingiverse).... waiting my matterform scanner...

Post some scanned samples when you get it.

Re: scan and print

I've been wanting to get skanect and mess around with it does anybody know how well it would work with large objects such as a car?

Re: scan and print

Ya for small objects the scanner on the kinect just isn't there. But I found for organic things I could get a decent scan that I could patch up in mesh mixer with relative ease.  As far as a car, size wise it shouldn't be a problem but I did notice that with some reflective surfaces I had trouble getting a good scan but hey, it's worth a shot. I would like to see what you guys come up with.
