Topic: Tall print projects detach from print bed...

Hello all....
I have a Solidoodle 2 and I have been having printing tall projects. The projects come loose from the bed and the print is ruined. I had used hairspray and I keep the  bed between 95-102 degrees. Sometime the print goes trough, but then the bottom begins to melt. Does any have any ideas? Thanks 3D commun!

Re: Tall print projects detach from print bed...

Have you made an enclosure? What is the room temp? Are there any outside doors that are opened or closed during a print that may cause a breeze to come? Do you have a space heater next to the printer? Have you tried ABS slurry?

I had the same problem you did. Each improvement I made fixed the issue more and more. Here is a list of things to do in order to stop that from happening.

  • Enclosure
Space heater next to the printer
Kept in a room with the doors closed so there are no sudden breezes
    ABS slurry
    Print wit a raft
    Leveled bed with calibrated z-tab

All I can think of right now.

Hello Snickers-

To answer your questions: Yes, I have an enclosure. The room temperature is about 74 degrees. No doors are opened during printing. There are no space heater next to the printer. What is an ABS slurry?

Hello Hazer-

Umm, what is Brim? Ahh, I see it...that is what I was think off, but I had no idea what it was called. Thanks, I'll give that a try!

Re: Tall print projects detach from print bed...

ABS slurry is when you make a mixture of ABS filament (or just ABS of any form) and mix it with acetone so it dissolves into a slurry. You apply the slurry to the print bed just like hair spray.

Got it, thanks!

What do you mean?

If you're printing in ABS (which most of the advice above is for), "melting" the *bottom* should not be possible.  In this case, I assume you're referring to print warping (which is caused by uneven cooling => shrinking, not heating/melting), and advice should help.

If PLA, your bed temp is way too high -- reduce to about 50-60 (you want it below the glass transition temp) -- and also try without hairspray. Also, what is your extrusion temp...

Re: Tall print projects detach from print bed...

I have had good luck with adding a clamping location and clamping the part to the bed, With up to ten hours of printing time it is essential not to have the part fall off. I also need to watch the stackup of over extrusion to insure I am not making a knot to catch the extruder nozzle.

Thanks for the help guys....it looks like it is working! I need to make the brim a little smaller and turn my bed temp down a little bit, but it looks good.
