Topic: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

Seems there may or may not have been a bad batch of black ABS sent out and it would be nice if we could help Solidoodle figure out who has received it so that they can stop sending the filament if there is an issue and avoid using it in production. If you have had troubles with black not extruding, clogging, needing a much higher temp, sitting on your desk unused, please add when you received it.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

My printer keeps getting clogged, and has now completely screwed my hot end. I got some black ABS too, it arrived on the 23rd October, but was shipped out of their place on the 14th.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I've had nothing but great sucess with the black filament that I ordered from Solidoodle.

Both it and the spool of blue that I got give excellent results and I've never had an issue with the nozzle clogging.

Do you turn down your extruder temps between prints?  That should help.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I too have had issues with the black. For me, it strips extremely easily at speeds that my white runs at happily. I've just given up on it for now, it may run fine if I were to baby the hell out of it. I received it recently, about 2 weeks ago, when it seems like the bad batch is around. I have a separate roll of white from the same order, but i haven't opened it up yet.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

Yep. I always turn the extruder off between prints. It doesn't help. Every time mine has clogged has been half way through a print.

When did you order your black and when did you get it?

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

Arrived late September if I remember correctly........ I don't store it any special way either though I know I should since I've heard that the filament can retain moisture.  Prints great though.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I have gone through 3 spools that printed great also. It is just this last spool that won't extrude.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

My first few prints were with the solidoodle black- horribly stringy , basically fell apart after printing (at 190 then 210). I don't know if this is caused by the filament yet or just my inability to get settings to stick with slic3r. Switched to my GITD PLA and have been getting better prints.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I think filament QA (on the producer's side) is still a little spotty. It's not so much an issue of black filament being bad, or white filament being bad. Every so often a slightly bad batch will make it past everyone's radar. It is actually quite hard to check a whole roll of filament for defects at this time.

I can imagine it being difficult to spot the bad filament without printing it. Just wanted to give a heads up, through soliforum and google groups, that it seems like several spools didn't print well from this tight time frame. Thanks for clearing it up. Have you guys found any way to try and deal with filament that doesn't seem to want to extrude?

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I'm currently having a lot of issues with Solidoodle black. These include stripping, clogs and prints falling apart easily as coleke has described.

I'm wondering if the filament can be 'dried out' or something like that.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

Some of my finer parts I printed just before I started having massive issues were quite brittle too (I broke one by holding it cleaning off support material) where I had no issues with the first half of the spool. I'm glad there are people over here who provide filament. The cost of shipping it from the USA is as much as the filament itself.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I too have problems with the black filament, not only the only filament to clog the hotend but I also tore up a chunk of the polyimide film because it seems the last successful item printed was stuck down extremely well, I don't think I cut it, I think it actually tore as no tool edges were used near the center of the platform and I have been using a very level and stiff chisel point 3" scraper.  I replaced the film today and I intended to extrude an inch or so of filament but forgot to and when it started printing OK, I let it go since it was running OK and checked back and after the second or third slice printed the head had clogged.  resorted to a brand new single edge razor blade to scrape it off.  I was printing with 190c hotend and 85c hotbed (Solidoodle recommended), went up to 90c bed until the sticking issue due to items printing on the edges not sticking down.  Switching to another color to verify problem is with the black.  Have successfully printed in Green, Blue and Natural (all sourced through Solidoodle) all week (have had unit for ten days).  Natural seemed to stick better than Blue and Green, Black MUCH better.

Not at this time. There may be a way to dry the filament - we suspect moisture may be the issue.

If it is moisture that is the problem, why did I get sent a spool that cost me over $80 just wrapped in what looks like glad wrap with no decassent with it?

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

Well I have an unused spool of black filament from solidoodle I bought when I took delivery of it the beginning of august... now I'm scared to use it...

I think it's only a new batch, I used up my black spool from SD without incident and I got mine around the same time as you.

Oh alright, good to know smile

It is a batch related thing. We've sent filament back to our suppliers in the past for this. It's just hard to catch in QA.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I'm pretty convinced it is not a moisture problem. The stuff prints out perfectly and then just stops. With any kind of humidity or moisture problem, there are usually some bubbles and rippling apparent throughout the print and it doesn't generally stop the printer. I could be wrong, but this has been my experience so far and sounds like the same one most people are having.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I also have this problem with the black filament I ordered from solidoodle. The first few meters were ok. Good prints. But then, suddenly the extruder nozzle got clogged. I was happy to have one for replacement. But it it got immediately clogged too. So I tried to clean it as good as possible with a copper wire. Probably most of the black ABS could be removed. Then tried it with blue ABS, which seemed to work a lot better, but still not as good as the black ABS before it started to suck. So I'm still trying to clean my 2 extruder nozzles from all the bad black filament. Hopefully, I don't need a third extruder nozzle after so few prints.

Order ID: #3329
Date of order: 5 Aug 2012
Delivery 19 Dec 2012

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I have a spool of black, received with my printer (delivered 11/27), and it prints great at 195. No clogging, and the only time it stripped was when it got caught on the case before I put in my filament bushing. Cleaned the feed wheel with air and a toothbrush, fed the filament in through the top with the case off and presto, printed the filament bushing fine.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I managed to print with my black filament for a bit before it started jamming.  I printed the bushing 2 times (scaled up the second so it was a good friction fit), a replacement set of extruder mountings (to replace the jigsaw) and some calibration cubes and shapes.  I was going to return it, but I read on a google groups post that SD had tested some rolls of returned black and found that they just needed higher temperatures to work correctly.

Then I did some testing and found that my extruder was reporting a temp of 200C but was actually at 174C...  it is possible that the problems people are having might be similar to mine. I fixed my temp tables in the code last night, and I have not tried to use the black since, so I don't know if it will fix that problem yet.

I mention it because it is worth checking to see if the temperature reported on the SD2 is accurate or not.

Re: Issues with black ABS from Solidoodle

I got the problem solved for now. I completely cleaned my nozzle and put the filament in the oven for about 12 hours at 80°C, since I suspected a HUMIDITY PROBLEM because there were some cracking noises at the nozzle as it came out. Since then, I was able to print a few clean parts before it clogged again in the middle of a big part.. Then I used the oven again for 4 hours and didn't even have to clean the nozzle again and could print over 15 very smooth prints until now.
My clogging problem was at nozzle temp 200°C. So a low temperature was not the problem.. I have now best prints at 190°C.
The oven helped me, I hope it can help you too!
Best to have the filament stored in a airtight case with desiccant!
