Topic: Cost Calculator for those of you running a buisness.

What do you guys running a business use to calculate costs for for objects?

Been making some one off stuff and not sure how much I should be charging?

Note: This is just a hobby right now so it's not to important. Just trying to offset the costs of mods and filaments.

I charged 1/4th the volumetric cost of Shapeways plus a $5/part setup fee.

Ok, What about hours of modelling?

Or is that just included?

Haven't ever done modeling, but typical rates are $20-60/hour.

Well, it depends on what you're doing. Just modeling? Engineering? Design? The line gets blurry.

Modeling rates are substantially higher in my neck of the woods. It's a market system, set it high, see what happens.  I would think 85-100/hour is expected around here if your modeling is expert level, and your cad program is more than free software. A good friend of mine specialized in hard to model parts, and is fluent in all the major cad applications. His rate to medical device companies is way way higher than 85/hr. If you want a part quote you can get them online from companies like redeye on demand, owned by, Stratasys. I use these guys and others (Protomold, Schmidt) from time to time, as they do make quality parts. Depending on the part I can sometimes match the quality and halve their price. Sometimes being the operative word.

The design/engineering/modeling time is where the real money is made.  I generally (when i charge) go at about $40/hr  for just modeling.  Design/Engineering is about $60-80/hr depending on what it is.  Printing is the cheap part of the whole deal
