Topic: What crazy things have you been asked to do with your 3D Printer?

While I thought my 3D printer would be but fun, a nice hobby, and educational for me I was not expecting friend and family to take such an interest. I think 2/3's of my projects are now for others. I have quite a few art and cooking projects going now.

Are any of you doing unexpected things with your 3D printer?

Yep all the time

Just last week I printed a 2.5" to 3.5" hard drive adapter for an ssd drive I put in my friends computer.

Then another friend checked it out and said I'm going to need one to since I just bought an ssd!

My GF says I'm spending too much time with my printer.  Bet you can't guess what she told me to do with it....

A guy had me print a custom air duct for his miata, I thought that was really cool.  Had to do it in six parts.

But I've had a lot of requests that are way out of it, like one for a 3 foot each side cube of a mansion that the guy sent me pictures (bad pictures) of to draw the files for...Told him that was going to cost way too much in time and plastic [gave him actual estimates.] Never heard back, heh.

A handle for an obsolete piece of equipment at work.
it took 30 minutes to draw it up in cad.
I uploaded it to Shapeways so they could see the cost.
then made the part and installed it. it cost me $2 in filament
and now they are talking about getting a printer for the plant.
And when they do i will have a new job title.

1) Threaded Arm Connector for my brother's archaic Autopilot Sailboat tiller control...we couldn't take naps up and down Lake Ontario without that thing, but it was last manufactured decades ago.
2) Replacement rotating feet for the same boat's 12V portable fan. (Naps again...)

unconvincing narrative." Pooh in "The Mikado", Gilbert and Sullivan

Haha! I'd offered to start printing printers for my friends.. But evidently they are more content to drive me insane with inane printing idea's, rather than working out printing for themselves.

Re: What crazy things have you been asked to do with your 3D Printer?

My most unusual thing is also probably my best example of what's great about 3D printing, because it fits a very specific need no one else would ever have:

In the narrow space between a countertop and the cabinet above it, the only place where I can store them, it hangs on the wall both the funnel and the ladle I use in mixing and bottling up the custom syrup I use to make soda in my SodaStream, keeping them clean, dry, out of the way, but immediately where I need them.  There's nothing you could buy anywhere that'd meet the need, and making it yourself from other materials would require a lot more work and skill.

My wife found out my thingiverse account and add a "Honey Do" collection for me. Guess what I will be doing during Christmas break. Oh well, at least I get to print things smile

Re: What crazy things have you been asked to do with your 3D Printer?

For those of you with wives/GF/partners that don't want you spending so much time with the printer, do what wire10ga did.  Show them thingiverse.  Soon they will find out you can make cool stuff and love you for it smile

One word of warning, however.  you may find you actually have less time for your own projects. sad

Re: What crazy things have you been asked to do with your 3D Printer?

I had to set up a list and as the top one on the list is complete I move to the next one in line.
I told her she needed her own printer and her reply was WHY I have yours!
Whats mine is hers and whats hers is hers!!
