I can see it now
all the sad and frustrated user's that will receive their printer due to the fact that solidoodle doesn't acknowledge in fixing their flaws.
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
Printed Extruder -

This one looks like an all-metal hot end as well-

Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
That's a start in the right direction
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
Is it me, or does that last pic's hot end look a little weird... kinda like a straight tube through with no cooling on it. Thinner than an e3d, obviously, but still kinda homegrown.
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
I'm also amused that the bot farm has been given names from Star Trek. ![]()
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
Here is a shot from last Feb. The first extruder picture is similar to this one, but they added more guidance for the filament under the gear, which was a problem with Lawsy's as well.

It's good that they are looking at all metal hot ends. Hopefully they have moved on to a heat sink since E3D figured out that it is pretty mandatory, especially with PLA. The only time mine clogged was when I didn't notice that the fan got stuck.

Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
Interesting that most of the printers have the old wooden z carriage.
There is one additional photo on the site, a high res shot of the metal hot end:

Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
I'm curious how long they've had all metal hot ends on their printers in the bot farm and haven't implemented it on their newly shipped SD2,SD3 and SD4 orders
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
Just from the one bot farm shot it looks that that's a lone standout... probably a homegrown test piece. The rest are mostly (6 of the 8 I can see) the old ceramic core hot ends, which shows that if you can take care of them they last...
I couldn't... ![]()
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
A couple observations.
"Sulu" (bottom left) has writing on it: "10/17/13 New Limit Switch (X, Y & Z)
"Dax" (middle right) has a tag: "2/19 Testing New Metal <can't make it out>", looks like it's something on top of the kapton on the bed.

Looks like a 1/4 of an inch plate judging by it's thickness versus others.
Wonder if they read my thread that I had on replacing the plate with a 1/4 of an inch plate
or just finally listened through all the emails regarding a warped bed.

It says New Metal Platform and I see glass and what looks to be hairspray on the glass.
Guess we do things right around here (LOL) ![]()
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
You know I see a few of the printers with binder clips and what seems to be glass on them lol..
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
I wonder which Dax they like more... ![]()
Glad to know the team there are just as geeky!
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
They maybe geeky but certainly not caring!

Hard to say. They may just be testing other options. If I were them, I would think the bot farm would be the best way to try out new ideas.
Also, I'd probably send out the best machines and keep the older machines getting what value I can out of them.

Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
Can't see leadscrew on Spock, but green label says "M92 Z1512". That's not a 1/18" thread pitch...
Edit: Assuming 1/16 microstepping, that's exactly 12TPI.. any ideas? 3/8" Acme, or...?

Indeed -- here it is, though an agressive unsharp mask filter:
Also, the Dr. Crusher label says: "New metal pulley / New belts / Supplier (Chengdu)"
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
The label on the new bed one says 2/19, which is when they were testing the aluminum platform. The other things are probably the same parts from different suppliers.
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
Ok, exclusive here. A while ago I received this PM:
Would like to get your input on this. Printed out your MK5 replacement extruder that's not the problem. My friend gave me his SD3 purchased the unit guessing 6 months ago. He has not changed or modified any part on the SD. The extruder on this one does not look like anything on the SD website not made out of acrylic. Its a printed extruder black abs, no other pictures on the net looks like it. Already contacted SD they said its not their unit, trying to figure out how and who's it is. May be a design was not suppose to be released beta.
Could not fit any of the MK's replacements cause the way the original extruder is screwed to the carriage. Seen all the units have the screws on the front. Original has the screws going downward. Not able to attach images on here. Didn't want to post it on an open forum in case this is beta or something else for SD. I appreciate your help.

The hot end definitely matches the one earlier in the thread. Looks like they accidentally let one into the wild. The best part is that they either denied it, or the support person didn't even know it existed.
Re: Solidoodle Factory Tour
I like the quick release. And check out the Z banding on the filament retainer. The other carriages seem to be printed in other colors. I wonder if they are nonstandard as well.
If Solidoodle were Apple, the Solidoodle Police would be knocking on that guy's door. I wonder if he found that printer left behind in a bar.

Dun dun dun. Mysterious.
