Topic: Calabi-Yau manifold?

Hey peoples,

Wondering if anyone has managed to slice this with any non-makerbot software suites?

Haven't had any luck repairing it with Netfabb cloud or the free software version... And Slic3r seems to be unable to process it.

Any tips would be much appreciated smile

Re: Calabi-Yau manifold?

Hey Serin,

What version of slic3r are you running? The newest version seems to be very adept at slicing things previous versions couldn't. I will try to slice it later myself.

I am in the middle of a print that has failed 3 times before because of one reason or another. I don't want to risk messing it up right now by having my computer lock up if slicer flips out on me.

EDIT: http://slic3r.org/ <--- 1.0 R1 is the latest

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

I'm running the latest as well, and indeed it does a wonderful job slicing, it just seems to be incapable.
Thanks for the response smile
I'll probably try to manually fix it if it comes to it, got Christmas orders to fill!

Re: Calabi-Yau manifold?

Ok, I gave this a try and it worked for me.  I used Slic3r 1.0.0 RC1.

The actual slicing took about 5 minutes, and the it took 6 1/2 minutes to write the gcode file, because the resulting gcode is over 220MB.

Prior to slicing, I rotated the model 90° on the "X" axis, this way it actually has 3 points it "sits" on, so I added a bit of a raft, and a brim to give it something to stick to.  This should be printable without any kind of support.

However, there are quite a few flaws in the resulting slice.  There are some missing parts at certain intersections.  This is NOT because the object isn't manifold, because it is, it's because there are hundreds of holes occurring at just about every tube intersection.  So I imported it into NetFabb and closed all the holes, only this introduced some 1380 non-manifold vertices which I fixed using MeshLab.

Anyway, the new model slices beautifully, and it looks like it's quite printable, except it looks like it would take 28 hours to print it, and it would use 70 meters of filament.  The resulting Gcode file is 241MB.
