Topic: Blobby filament

I am trying out an ebay pellet vendor who sells pellets left over from an extrusion molding machine.  I am noticing some blobbing and I think it maybe related to the temperature of the hot end.  Basically, can someone help me understand:

If the filament is coming out too thick is the temperature a) too high or b) too low.  I know I will need to dial in the temperature these pellets require blindly, as I don't know the specifications for the ABS pellets.  Any advise on how to do this properly?

Thanks,
John Barnes

Re: Blobby filament

While I wait for reply's I am going to try a higher nozzle temperature.  Will post the results.

Re: Blobby filament

Another strange note, when I start extruding the temperature of the hot end drops by about 10 degrees.

Re: Blobby filament

Looking at the pellets I think these may be HDPE pellets, not ABS.  Has anyone tried extruding with HDPE?

Re: Blobby filament

The temperature of the hotend drops because the fan is controlled with the same switch as the motor.

To my knowledge, no one has attempted HDPE.

Re: Blobby filament

Rather than try and master an untested plastic, I think I will shift gears and go back to PLA.  Has anyone had success with PLA from a vertical filastruder?
