Topic: Gaps in my print - how do I fix them?

I'm trying to print this model, but I'm getting errors in the print, marked by arrows below. This makes the part very weak. What is the cause, and how can I correct this?

That looks like a stl/slicer problem. Run your stl through netfab. When you get the fixed version back, load it up into your software, slice it, then inspect your 3D graph of your Gcode really closely. I generally do this with complex parts in RH. Single layer view is awesome for this.

+1 for netfab - run all my prints through there.

SD2 - Glass Bed, Fans on PCB and Y motor, Custom enclosure
Slicer - Simplify3D

Thanks guys, I'll check that out tonight.

Yea, I have the same problems. The other day the printer printed two little notches that are not part of the design! And I also have the gaps problem! I will try netfab! Thanks for the tip!

If you used sketchup to design that, it also helps to make sure all outside faces are facing outward.  The faces on sketchup have an inside and an outside.  The darker one is the inside and the lighter one is the outside.  Right click and choose "reverse faces" for a darker (inside) face and you should be good to go.  I didn't see any reversed faces in the picture, but assuming it was made with sketchup, it's worth checking.  It took me months to figure out why my parts had random holes or triangles in them (like yours).  I only mention this because I have always run every part I've printed through Netfabb, but it does not fix the model properly if the faces are reversed.

I don't know about the gaps in the Z direction, but those x-y gaps look exactly like my very first print, and doing the solidoodle recommended circle alignment adjustments worked great for me. See my experiences at:

Re: Gaps in my print - how do I fix them?

I see similar but MUCH reduced artefacts on my prints. of I have an indent/hole in a vertical wall there is always a slight depression at that height along that side.

I also have the fill not quite meeting the perimeters, but again it's only on certain tool paths.

Mine are minimal to the point of not being important, and I always 'thought' it was a calibration issue. But after a few recalibration attempts and testing objects that are built differently I am now suspecting it may actually be SlicR.

I tried to use the alternative slicer once.. but it was so obtruse and complicated that I gave up.

Tried netfabb...no joy. Print looked exactly the same.

COASTER19, it is Sketchup indeed. The part was solid, manifold, and all faces pointing the right way so that's why I was surprised.

Claghorn, I think you may be onto something. My circles are out of whack too, so I'll give that a shot. I was hoping for a little less tweaking and more printing on my first week with the printer though!

Gomisan, I suspected Slic3r as well and thought I'd try Kisslicer...after searching all over for some settings, I circled back to the Kisslicer thread here. Tried the latest settings posted, imported the gcode into Repetier, and it looks like a tangled mush of spaghetti sad Back to Slic3r I go!

BTW, is there anywhere with a simple 1..2..3 guide to using Kisslicer with Solidoodle? I see Ian's and other's results with it look better that Slic3r's in many cases, but getting started seems harder than it should be.

Thanks, everybody!

If you find one let me know.. kissslicr has teh worst interface I've seen on a program since 1989

I'm well into my second month, and still trying to get all the calibration dialed in perfectly :-). I definitely get the impression that it is impossible to send these on long trips bouncing around on UPS trucks and expect them to arrive perfectly calibrated no matter how they left the factory.

Try lowering you perimeters to 1 or 2 and reslicing with slic3r. Check the results in RH before reprinting. Can you post you part also.

Calibrating the printer did the trick - thanks Claghorn!

Now I'm off to calibrate the extruder and filament...
