Topic: Here's a real weird one for ya

Please open the attached part. See the line that I have the three labels on? Notice both ends of the line are at 10.500 height? But the middle of the line is 10.492!

I have deleted the line, deleted everything around it (as you can see) and every time I redraw the line, it does it again. The point where it dips down is/was the intersection with the wall you see at right angles to the line.

There is a "shard" there, the odd lines and planes formed by SketchUp's Intersect function, for some damned reason. I try to never use Intersect unless I have to and only "Intersect to Selected" instead of "Intersect to Model", to try and avoid these "shards" but nonetheless.

It seems to me there is no way to delete a shard. Erase Hidden Geometry doesn't do it, Select and Delete sure don't. I haven't found a plug-in or tool that does either.

I know how the shard got there and why: the line in question was dipped in the middle when an Intersect was performed and is now pledging to never surrender, to fight on the beaches and in the hills. It shall never surrender!

Unless one of you sharpies can tell me how to kill the little bugger. Please, oh please!

Perhaps I should actually post the file too. D'oh!

I posted SU Version 8 but have Version 13 if anyone prefers that, or an STL. Thanks.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

See attachment.

Like your last one, this file is plagued by many, many errors and things that should have been modelled correctly from the start.

If it were possible to sit down one and one I would be happy to model it from scratch in Sketchup with you but it's too hard to down otherwise.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

Well, that made me look silly. Thanks, Lawsy. Sorry to be such a pain. See, I started this model from scratch with the intent to not do anything bohemian or dog-barfy as you might say. And, still, I end up with bad design.

You say there is a lot wrong. I don't blame you for taking a pass on the details but could you point me to the tools you use to quickly see that it is a mess? Maybe my tool box just sucks, along with my experience level.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

You might want to start out working on a few simpler objects. When you see blue faces on the exterior of your walls, you know that something is wrong and you have an object that is not manifold.

SD3 w/ mods:
Glass bed with QU-BD heat pad upgrade, threadless ballscrew w/ 8mm smooth rod, spectra line belt replacement, lawsy MK5 extruder, Lawsy replacement carriage, E3D hotend, Ramps 1.4 w/ reprap discount controller, DRV8825 drivers, 12v 30A PS, Acrylic case, Overkill Y-idlers, Filament alarm, Extruder fan + more.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

Ok, here are some of the problems as seen in my attachment.

Top: Random segments missing from outer round part.

Middle: Random holes, random face segmentation (shown by hidden dotted lines).

Bottom: Multiple circular edges with same diameter but with slightly different rotations, as well as random missing edges.

You mentioned you used the intersect with selection feature, which is fairly useful. In this model however, I don't see any reason to use that.

It looks like the vast majority could just be made with drawing 2D profiles and push pulling.

Are you working from a detailed dimensioned drawing? If so and you can send it to me, I can have a go a modelling it in SketchUp and recording a video explanation in the process.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

That's very nice of you to offer, Lawsy. I appreciate that. However, I redesigned and redrew it from scratch. I boiled it down as simple as I could and it prints now.

I'm glad Solidoodle an SketchUp have such a good community of users here that are willing to dig in and help out a stranger. I have my E3D on the way and learning things every day, so I'm hanging in there confident of eventual proficiency. Either that or I'll strangle myself and throw my body in Smithville Lake along with some of my crappy drawings.

The bitter irony is, I read ABS floats even though it is denser than water and so all of you bad prints will keep you from drowning. Maybe look for a bridge.

Would I be looking for your body somewhere off of Kelsey Short youth camp,  or maybe closer to the marina?   Having grown up in St Joe,  I've done my share of camping out there.

Oh, THAT's what's wrong with you!    ;^)  Yipper, we built a place on the very southern tip of the Lake. Where are you now, Ian?

Once, years ago, there was a young guy working the register at Best Buy I think. I asked him if his name was pronounced EE-un or EYE-un. He EYE-un but that it was insightful (maybe inciteful?) that I should ask. I think Mr. Fleming pronounced his EE-un.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

I downloaded the original model Heartlander posted and I already have about 3 hours into it, trying to clean it up, but it's tough, this is not a well built model.

As Lawsy had already pointed out, there are many segments missing and small random segments intersecting other parts for no particular reason.  It's as if many of the surfaces were created by intersecting one or more parts, then the unwanted parts were discarded without any concern to the integrity of the mesh.

I just downloaded this model and I'll take a look at it.  I I ever get to fix them I'll post them back here.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

Pirvan, please don't bother. Thanks anyway, but its already fixed. I admit it was a bit of a crime scene, my first SketchUp model. I appreciate your attempt to help.

Re: Here's a real weird one for ya

Well, I did it anyway, The SketchUp model looks clean, but it still had a few intersecting faces, which prevented it from slicing correctly, so I fixed them in MeshLab & NetFabb.  Now the STL slices cleanly in SLic3r

Here are the 2 files:
