Topic: Any hired guns out there?

I am only into Sketchup a few weeks and going through a lot of the same learning pains i guess most folks do. At least those of us without a prior background in CAD.

Anyway, I am pondering paying someone to go over my best efforts and clean them up to production quality AND point out to me the mistakes and how to prevent repeating them again. In other words, I'm willing to hire a hired gun to assist my QC and school me a bit so I don't have to continue to ask for help on my drawings.

I have tried to educate myself, watched the videos, bought a Dummies book even but most of my real education has come from the grey beards here on this forum.

I hate to keep asking for help and I know that people have their own work to do so maybe I can sweeten the pot. Being a start-up (unfunded) and living on a fixed income (disability) I am pretty limited as to what I can pay but willing to talk about it.

So, anybody interested? To get a sense of what I'm working on, check out my STL and SKP attached.

We may start a trend, like micro-consulting or something.

Thanks, a bunch. I am struggling with the mechanics of my printer right now When I get er going again I'll post some stuff to look at.

You have a fair number of openings that will cause issues with making a solid object. i.e. inside the tube, in some of your letters etc.

You should also reverse the blue faces so that it appears all one material (white/grey).
Your letters are not 3d. You will need to pull them from the face or they will not appear in the print.

One thing I definitely recommend is using Solid Tools in Sketchup.  Make all of your objects out of tiny components and then combine them together.

Thanks Krythis and ITMan. I didn't realize the direction a face was in made a difference if it would print or not, I thought it was just for presentational clarity. Those holes, how do they get there? I think it is the tools I use (like make faces) pto solve one problem, causing another.

As far as tools, I have Make Faces 1.4, Solid Solver (which seems to cause as many problems as it fixes), Edge Tools, Vertex Tools (which I've not used yet), Clean Up3 (which seems very good) and SuSolid (also a good tool set). But, I've not seen Solid Tools, where do I get that?

The principle of building small components and putting them together makes perfect sense. I've scrapped this design twice and started over, I will do that again and use that method, making sure to prefect and print a piece before going forward.

Meanwhile, I have to resolve this filament kinking problem. 1.75MM ABS has worked fine until I put on Lawsy's MK5 extruder assy. I also adjusted the drive wheel out about a MM to align with the extruder intake orifice and put on a better tensioner screw but still it kinks between the drive wheels and the extruder. I've used 2N2R5's little tubing suggestion but need to stabilize the piece with some glue because it gets sideways and screws it up.

So, I'm a mechanic for a while before I can be a designer again. Thanks much for your help.

I use Solid Inspector which is what you see in that image above. It identifies the issues and you simply hit tab to be brought to one. Fix it as you see fit, then hit tab to proceed. It's not the best, but works well for me. You should be able to fix this design without completely scrapping it. Might take a couple hours of tinkering, but should work. Only other issue i see is you have text on two surfaces. If you plan on printing this the way it is orientated that may require support or a raft.
