Topic: Printer keeps resetting when using Flex PLA

So I got some of the Flex PLA 1.75 filament for my SD3 and set out to print my first sex toy (kidding) but ran into problems. The Maker Geeks web site said 220-230C is optimum for Flex ecoPLA. I set mine up to that and waited for a warmup. It tripped and reset, said the extruder was overheating.

Another part of their web site said 210C so I dropped it to 210, same thing.

I see some of the Taulman nylon filaments want 265C temps.

Am I doing/not doing something wrong/right? Does the SD3 have a problem with higher temps?

I've printed PLA (not flex) @ 145C

Try lowering your temp quite a bit.

Thanks, 3D-oodler (and Adrian). Yeah, I noticed my laser thermometer had a bone of contention with the printer over the temps. Now it makes sense.

I doubt you have a laser thermometer. You have an IR thermometer. Make sure you understand the concept of emissivity before trusting it.

SD measures nozzle temp, most printers measure heater temp. Thus the ~30C difference between what is recommended and what SD users print at.

Is there more information on this? I mean, I've been printing at temps that I see recommended for the filament, not adjusting for anything with the SD.

The Solidoodle instructions (such that there are) dont tell us to adjust temps by 30C

Well, yeah, it is a laser-aimed passive IR thermometer. Genuine Centech (Harbor Fright).

I lowered the temp "setting" from 205 to 195 and tried again to print with flex PLA. It keeps kinking up between the extrusion wheels and the hot end orifice. THen the original jigsaw shattered, I guess from overheating. Anyway, it was an excuse to tear it out and put Lawsy's MK5 on, now I'm having to modify it. I also added in 2N2D5's little 1/4" of tubing between the wheels and orifice to prevent kinking, good mod BTW.

So, as soon as I'm back up and running, I'll let you know how I make out.
