Topic: Week 4 Solidoodle II Print Challenge (Tree)

Been holding on to this one for a while now and it is from a print challenge at a maker faire...I made sure this file is fixed up and scaled to fit on the Solidoodle... Slic3r and SF both slice it as is and it is about 120 mm tall.  I haven't quite got it to finish yet... Got about 80% of the way done before it lost contact.  Curious how well anyone else can get it to come out... Definitely tests the z lift which has been an ongoing discussion in solidoodle google groups.

That looks like quite a challenge.

Holy crap! Good luck everybody.

Re: Week 4 Solidoodle II Print Challenge (Tree)

If you want to use SF look into the Hop setting for Z lift.  Also a nozzle can will help.  The overhanging perimeters tend to curl up as they cool slowly. The nozzle catches them and breaks the branch or knocks the model loose.

What's the print time?

Re: Week 4 Solidoodle II Print Challenge (Tree)

2.5 hours for .1 mm and about an hour for .3 mm. I print with 4 or 5 perimeters, no infill, and about 15 solid layers so the base is sturdy.

I believe this was the "torture" print at this years maker faire.

Really enjoying seeing these challenge threads each week, I hope it continues.
I am being increasingly blown away by what these machines are even capable of attempting.
I wish my tracking would update from arrived in aussie USPS sorting faclity ..

USPS sucks for tracking, we apologize.

This is my first attempt at 0.3mm layers. I am assuming that if i did 0.1mm layers I would have gotten further. Im still really happy with how far it got. I got to about 85-90% before a branch snapped off and it started printing in thin air. It stuck to the bed well and good.

Nicely done, anything special about your settings that you can share?

Re: Week 4 Solidoodle II Print Challenge (Tree)

Nothing too crazy. I used a z lift of 0.5, which seems to help avoid smashing into things. I'm quite impressed with how durable it is when it is printing. It gets pushed around quite a bit, but it keeps going.

Scale it .5

There's no way anyone will get this over hang to work. Good Luck!

I think its possible with the right material.  I just wish it wasn't a terribly ugly part...

Re: Week 4 Solidoodle II Print Challenge (Tree)

As a newcomer to these forums I like the idea of a print challenge forum. I see the idea got started last year and then this seems to be the last of them. 4 weeks! You guys could only keep it going 4 weeks!?

Any takers for seeing these challenges brought back to life?

Re: Week 4 Solidoodle II Print Challenge (Tree)

How about re-posting the older challenge prints for those of us that missed them?
