Topic: PLA funnel

Does anyone know how hot the feed pipe gets?  I am curious if I can print the funnel in PLA.

Re: PLA funnel

The extruder barrel is roughly 1/4th the nozzle temperature, plus ambient. So, at 160C nozzle and 20C ambient, the portion of the extruder barrel near the hopper is around 60C.

PLA feeds fine, but needs a winder for best results. It tends to elongate under its own weight otherwise.

I think he means the hopper and hopper funnel in pla Tim.

Re: PLA funnel

Whoops! I misread.

Hopper made our of PLA should be ok. Hopper funnel out of PLA will definitely be ok.

Re: PLA funnel

I printed the hopper in PLA and it weakened enough for a gap to appear and the pellets to escape from under the nipple, but that was when I set the temperature to 225°C. After that I printed a different one in ABS. My hopper funnel however is still in PLA.

That's a good data point. The PLA hopper should be ok at 180C nozzle temps, but ABS is definitely preferred.
