Topic: 3D software Newbie

hi guys

was just thinking of buying myself a 3d printer and was wondering, do they come with software when you buy them??

what is the best software to use for beginners?

is there a way to make everyday objects into 3d? some sort of 3d scanner maybe?

thanks for any advice smile

Re: 3D software Newbie

If you haven't use a 3d software before forget software like blender !
Try google sketchup(it's free), you will have to learn a little bit how to use it(as every software of course) but you will be soon ready to create what you want.

To scan 3d object is a little bit expensive, the less expensive I Know for small object is:

it's one of the less expensive 3d scanner(i've got one) but you will also have to learn how to use it correctly

Or you have this :

http://reconstructme.net/

It needs a kinect to work with and it's for bigger object.

Cubify Invent is cheap and with the tutorials on youtube it was pretty easy for me to pick up.  I am total newb as well.  Sketchup is good too.  Try them all out with some tutorials.  None of them will be immediately simple, but after you go through a few tutorials it gets easier.

Also check out tinkercad.  Very simplistic, but you can get some of your basic stuff done with it pretty fast.

Re: 3D software Newbie

I bought a new video card for use with Reconstructme that was on their list of fully supported cards.  It has never worked for me and lately they don't respond to posts about it on their forum.  I would not buy software from these guys.  However, I am able to use my card and Kinect with Kinect Fusion.  If you already have a mid-level gaming card and a Kinect, scanning is basically free though the resolution could be better.

Re: 3D software Newbie

thanks for all the answers guys, I do have a computer background so I'm used to using new software, I'm party disabled so been out of work for some years, I find this 3d stuff ready interesting and was hoping with this new technology just coming out and getting bigger and better to sort of try to earn a few ££ out of it. smile

will check out the software and see where it leads me then maybe look into buying a 3d printer smile

Blender3d is awesome.  I don't know anyone that's spent more than a week on it that doesn't appreciate it's value.  You can literally model anything in minutes including built in sculpting.  It would be a shame to skip over it without giving it a whirl.

Re: 3D software Newbie

yeh I've downloaded Blender3d and it does look complicated but after playing around with SketchUp  for a few days building houses maby blender is next thing to move on to, does blender make your work watertight for sending to a printer?

Re: 3D software Newbie

Blender has what they call their 3d toolkit which has all kinds of useful stuff for 3d printing like tools to analyze models for holes tools to fix common problems and export meshes.

I would recommend going through training videos found all over the net for Blender3d.  You can start but printing out a list of the shortcut keys for Blender3d and that in itself will tell you how useful it is.  There are many.
